Tempe railway station is situated on the Illawarra Line of the Sydney Trains system serving the suburb of Tempe. The station is located on the northern side of the Cooks River between Sydenham railway station and the Wolli Creek Junction. The station now consists of two side platforms and an island platform connected by an overbridge at the northern end. There is no lift access to the platforms.
History
Tempe opened in 1884 with the construction of the Illawarra railway line to Hurstville.[1] When opened in 1884, the station had two side platforms, current faces 1 and 2. When the line was quadruplicated in 1919, an additional platform, now numbered 4, was constructed on the eastern side and the Down platform converted to an island. Platforms 1, 2 and 3 retain their original station buildings.[2]
Prior the opening of Wolli Creek railway station and the Airport line in 2000, Tempe was the junction between the East Hills Line and the Illawarra Line, and local East Hills services stopped at the station utilising platforms 1 and 2. Most of the East Hills line services now run via the Airport and those running via Sydenham do not stop at Tempe.
Platforms and services
The station is usually serviced by local (all-stations) Illawarra line trains utilising platforms 3 and 4. Platforms 1 and 2 do not see regular timetabled service.
As of the new Sydney Trains timetables on Sunday the 20th of October 2013: on weekdays the station is served by two trains per hour in each direction for most of the day, with additional trains provided during peak hours; and on weekends the station is served by two trains per hour in each direction for most of the day.
