Taylor Ellington (born October 31, 1988) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He is currently playing with EfB Ishockey of the Danish AL-Bank Ligaen. He played five seasons for the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League (WHL). While there he earned team honors for most improved player after his first season and Co-MVP following his last season. He left the Silvertips as the all-time franchise leader in games played, which has since been surpassed. Ellington was drafted in the second round, 33rd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He has played for three of their affiliates, playing for the Manitoba Moose, Victoria Salmon Kings, and the Kalamazoo Wings. The Canucks traded Ellington's rights to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2012.

Playing career

Everett Silvertips

Ellington played is major junior hockey for the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Everett drafted him in the third round of the 2003 WHL bantam draft.[1] In his first season with the Silvertips Ellington played in 47 games recording a –6 rating with 48 penalty minutes (PIM).[2] At the end of the year he was named the Silvertips' most improved player.[3] In the playoffs Ellington added one assist in eight games as the Silvertips lost in the second round.[4] In his second year he recorded his first Career WHL regular season assist and finished the year with 7 points, all assists, in 63 games.[2] He recorded his first goal during the playoffs and added 2 assists in 16 games helping Everett to the WHL Conference Finals, where they eventually lost.[5] During the 2006–07 season he was selected to play in the Canadian Hockey League's (CHL) top prospects game.[6]

At the end of the year Ellington was drafted in the second round, 33rd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.[7] Ellington finished his third year with 5 goals, 13 points, and 65 PIMs.[2] He attended the Canucks' training camp but was returned to the Silvertips prior to the start of the season.[8] During his fourth year in Everett Ellington broke a bone in his foot blocking a shot.[9] The injury limited him to 48 games in the regular season where he scored 3 goals and 14 points and a career high +9 rating.[2] He played four more games in the playoffs where the Silvertips lost in the first round.[10] The following year he again attended the Canucks' training camp but was once more returned to Everett for his overage season.[11] In his final WHL season Ellington set career highs in games played (69), goals (6), assists (26), points (32), and PIMS (130). He also registered a career worst –20 rating.[2] His career year helped him be named Silvertips Co-MVP, with Shane Harper.[3] In the playoffs Ellington registered five assists in five games losing in the first round.[12] At the end of his Silvertips career Ellington was the all-time franchise leader in games played (287) and second all-time in penalty minutes (371). He has since been surpassed in both categories and as of the start of the 2011–12 season he ranks third in games played and fourth in penalty minutes.[13]

In march of 2009 Ellington signed a three-year entry level contract with Vancouver.[7] After the Silvertips were eliminated from the playoffs he made his professional debut playing one game for the Canucks' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Manitoba Moose, in the game Ellington scored his first professional goal.[14] The following year he was assigned by the Moose to the Canucks' ECHL affiliate the Victoria Salmon Kings.[15] During the season Ellington was named to the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game.[16] He spent the year splitting time between the Moose and Salmon Kings playing in a combined 67 games, scoring a combined 4 goals, and 18 points.[2] He again started the season with the Salmon Kings for the 2010–11 season. After playing only 14 games Ellington suffered a concussion that kept him out for the remainder of the year.

He attended Canucks training camp the following year but was assigned to their new AHL affiliate the Chicago Wolves.[17] He was unable to make the Wolves team and was assigned to the Canucks' new ECHL affiliate the Kalamazoo Wings.[18] During the NHL trade deadline on February 27, 2012, Ellington was traded, along with two 4th round draft picks, to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Sami Pahlsson.[19] The Blue Jackets then assigned Ellington to their ECHL affiliate, the Chicago Express.[20]

On August 29, 2012, as a free agent prior to the 2012–13 season, Ellington signed a one-year contract with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL. After scoring a respectable 16 points in 26 games for the Everblades, Ellington was traded to the Cincinnati Cyclones in exchange for Maury Edwards on January 2, 2013.[21]

On July 10, 2013, Ellington signed his first European contract as a free agent, agreeing to a one-year deal with EfB Ishockey of the Danish AL-Bank Ligaen.[22]

International play

In 2006 Ellington was selected to represent CHL as a member of WHL team in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.[1] In the WHLs first game of the tournament Ellington failed to register a point but registered a +1 rating in a 5–3 victory.[23] In the WHL's second game Ellington recorded two assists in a 8–1 win.[24] The win helped give the CHL an unbeaten 6–0–0 record in the tournament defeating the Russian team for the fourth straight year.[25]
