History

The beginnings of Tarma are lost by the oral tradition and were conserved solely in legend form. It is known that in the locality the populations of Tarmatampu and Punchawmarka (Punchaumarca) were located, inhabited by natives of the ethnic group of the "Tarumas" or "Tarmas". Before the arrival of the Spanish, one intuits that Tarma was founded according to old style customs of that time. The sources indicate that it was in 1538 when the Spanish formed the foundation of Tarma; trimming of soldiers at first took place, and soon after a parish was instituted under the authority of the bishopric of Lima.

During the Viceroyalty of Peru, Tarma would be established as the locality head. In 1784, the Spanish citizen Don Juan Maria Gálvez, made arrangements for the creation of a Town Hall in Tarma. This request was reviewed and approved by the Virrey Don Teodoro De Croix that established the Town Hall of Tarma in 1785. In 1815 the first cadastre was made in Tarma, concluding that the town had 775 houses and approximately 3500 inhabitants.

In the beginning of November, 1820, during the war of independence that took ahead general Don Jose of San Martín, the population of the city of Tarma supported the General Arenales. On the 25th of November, General Arenales reached Tarma, being welcomed with celebrations in the city.

On the 31st of December, 1855, Tarma officially became a province.

During the War of the Pacific, Tarma supported the Peruvian army, and later supported the resistance commanded by Marshal Andrés Avelino Cáceres.
