Taperoo /ˈtæpəruː/ is a north-western suburb of Adelaide 18 km from the CBD, on the LeFevre Peninsula in the state of South Australia, Australia and falls under the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. It is adjacent to Osborne and Largs North. It is bounded to the north by Moldavia Walk and Solvay Road, to the south by Strathfield Terrace, and in the west and east by Gulf St Vincent and the Port River respectively.
Taperoo is essentially a residential suburb, with a minor harbourside presence on the eastern shore of the suburb.Taperoo is an Aboriginal word which means calm. The area was previously a portion of an area named Silicate.
History
Osborneville Post Office opened around 1922, was renamed Taperoo on 1 February 1964 and North Haven in 1989.[1]
Facilities
The suburb is served by Ocean View College P-12 on Gedville Road. The Catholic Our Lady of the Visitation Primary School provides a religious alternative. The western coastal side of the suburb is also graced by a sandy beach. The suburb is the seat of Fort Largs Police Academy, the training facility for South Australia Police, and this is bordered Roy Marten Park, the primary recreational reserve in the suburb. A sand hill running track known as the Snakepit lies to the West of Roy Marten Park. The track length is 392 metres.
