Tamboli

The Tamboli are a Brahmin Hindu caste found in North India.[1]

Origin & History

"Tamboli" is taken from "Tambool" which means "Big Leaf" in Sanskrit, and are traditionally engaged in the selling of betel-leaves, better known as the "PAN" or "Big Leaf" in Hindi. They were traditional cultivators of the betel-leaves, while most of them were associated with the sale of "PAN" . They speak various local dialects of Hindi. The community is found throughout central and North part of India particularly M.P, Chattisgarh, Bihar, WEST BENGAL and eastern Uttar Pradesh.[2]n

Tamboli's are also a jain community in Gujarat, India. The founding fathers coming from Jamnagar erstwhile Navanagar kingdom, with Fulchand P Tamboli as the nagar seth (Chief City Businessman) from Jamnagar a title given to him by the King of Navanagar. Now the family dwell in Bhavnagar

Present circumstances

They have set up their own caste association, the Maghaiya Tamboli Hitasi Samaj, which acts as a community welfare associations. The Tamboli last name is also found in Muslims and Hindus, and are fairly orthodox.[3]
