Taliparamba (also known as Perimchellur) is a city and a municipality of 67,000 people in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala, spread over an area of 43.05 km2. It stretches from the coastal area of Ramanthali to the villages of Nuchiyad and Vayathur, and touches Kerala's border with Karnataka.

The surrounding area (including the villages of Pattuvam, Kuttikkol, Karimbam) features lush green fields and little rolling hills. The rivers of Kuppam and Valapattanam surround the town from all sides and the Arabian sea is only 14 kilometres to the west. The hanging bridge at Kuttiyeri and Kooveri, and the riverside temple at Parassinikkadavu, attract a large number of tourists. Tamiparamba also gained national attention after theseizure of arms from what was alleged to be an arms training center of the Popular Front of India (PFI).

Taliparamba originated as the Perinchalloor Brahman settlement. Of the 2,000 Brahman families who settled it, only 45 remain. Today, Muslims and Christians form a sizeable portion of the population.

Well-known institutions in and near Taliparamba include the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kannur and Pepper Research Stations of the Kerala Agricultural University at Panniyur, the Pariyaram Medical College, Kannur University, and Sir Syed College, Karimbam. The Sree Raja Rajeswara Temple and the Trichambaram Temple are renowned places of worship. The old name of Taliparamba was Lakshmipura, as it was considered as an abode of prosperity.

Geography

Taliparamba is located at 12°03′N 75°21′E / 12.05°N 75.35°E / 12.05; 75.35.[1] It has an average elevation of 56 metres (183 feet).

Administration

Taliparamba is the second largest Taluk in Kerala. Taliparamba is a municipality, with an area of 43.08 km2. It is divided into 44 wards.[2] The headquarters of Taliparamba Taluk are located in Taliparamba. There are 47 villages in the Taluk. They are spread from the coast to the hills. The 13 village panchayats that form Taliparamba's block panchayat are the following:

The Payyanur and Irikkur block panchayats are also in this Taluk. It is also an Assembly constituency, traditionally held by left-wing parties.[3] At present, James Mathew is the MLA. Parts of this constituency belong to Kannur Parliamentary constituency. There is also a police station and court. Other 2-L.A. constituencies are Payyanur and Irikkur. As of 2013, Shri. C. Krishnaan & Shri. K.C. Joseph represent these 2-L. A. constituencies.

Taliparamba is home to a number of temples, churches and mosques. Temples include the Rajarajeshwara Temple, Trichambaram Temple and Parassinikkadavu Temple. Taliparamba Juma Masjid and St. Mary's Church are other prominent religious centres in the town.

Educational institutes

In the 14th and 15th centuries, during the regime of the Kolathiri Rajas, Taliparamba was renowned in Kerala as a seat of learning, enlightenment and culture. Notable educational institutes in Taliparamba include the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kannur Engineering College, University Campus and HQ,Moothedath High School, Tagore Vidyaniketan Higher Secondary School, Seethi Sahib High School, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and Sir Syed College.

Cyberpark

The LDF government, lead by CM and IT minister VS Achuthanandan and following its ‘hub & spoke’ model of development of IT industry, has established a ‘Cyberpark’ in Kozhikode as a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which will form the ‘hub’ in the Malabar region. Cyberpark proposes to set up an IT/ITES park in Kannur as its first spoke as SEZ for the overall development of IT industry in the Malabar region in general and Kannur district in particular. The park is named CYBERPARK, Kannur. About 10.375 hectares of revenue land has already been handed over by Government of Kerala for this project. It is expected that implementation of an IT Park with state-of-art infrastructure facilities and professional administration will attract several major players of the industry to come and establish their business here which in turn will give an impetus for the sustained growth of this traditionally backward region.

The park has negotiated the purchase (under FTP) of 103,750 hectares of land in Eramom village, Taliparamba Taluk. SEZ status has been received. The park is 120 km away from Kozhikode Airport.

As a part of initial infrastructure development, it is proposed that the Cyberpark will create several facilities and elemetns of infrastructure, including internal roads, a Common Facilities Centre (called a Park Centre, with convention and other facilities), a water treatment plant and water supply and distribution system, an IT Building (150,000 square feet) with car parking and other facilities like DG backup, a food court, a utility station, etc., power infrastructure, and a waste water treatment plant and disposal system.

Kottiyoor Utsavam

Kottiyoor Vysakha Mahotsavam is a huge religious pilgrimage attracting thousands of pilgrims. The devotees move as a convoy from Taliparamba to the pilgrimage. It is a festival commemorating the Daksha yaga.

Demographics

As of the 2001 Indian Census, Taliparamba had a population of 67,441. 32,511 people (48%) were males and 34,930 people (52%) were females. Taliparamba has an average literacy rate of 90%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is 95.54%, and female literacy is 84.52%. In Taliparamba, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. The density is 1398 persons/sqkm.
