Syriatel (Arabic: سيريتل) is a privately owned telecommunications company founded in 2000. It is owned by Rami Makhlouf, a first cousin of President Bashar al-Assad. Syriatel controls 55% of the local mobile telecommunication services market and has the largest subscriber base in Syria.[citation needed] Its network covers 99% of the populated areas.[citation needed] In 2008 Syriatel launched an Broadband Internet access service under the name "Surf".
