Sweyne Park School is a Coeducational secondary school situated in Rayleigh, Essex, England, with specialised provision for hearing-impaired pupils.[1] The school was formed in September 1997 following the amalgamation of The Sweyne School and The Park School. The Headteacher is Mr Andy Hodgkinson MA (Oxon) who took the position in 2006, following the death of the highly respected founding Headteacher, Kate Spiller B.Ed., M.A.
The school is currently an 11-16 academy academy status (with a roll of 1240 pupils); from September 2014 the age range will become 11-18, with the addition of a sixth form to which 140 students, including 15 external students, will be admitted in Year 12.
From the outset, the governors and staff of Sweyne Park were determined to establish a school committed to securing the success of all pupils and to ensuring that all achievement is celebrated and valued. A strong ethos of respect lies at the heart of everything done in school and pupils are encouraged to respect themselves, other people and the environment. This focus on respect leads to high expectations and excellent discipline,[2] which in turn leads to high levels of achievement for each individual pupil.
In 2007, the school embarked on its journey to become a Thinking School,[1] which has been instrumental in the school’s continued success, including gaining an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating in 2010.[2]
The school has established a strong reputation in the educational community, taking a lead in a range of projects including the Employability for Life Charter, Pupil Voice and improving the accessibility of learning environments, especially for pupils with hearing impairment.
