Swedish Medical Center is a large nonprofit health care provider located in Seattle, Washington. It has three main hospital locations in Seattle and is also affiliated with many other suburban hospitals and clinics. As of 2009 it has 7000 employees and 2,300 credentialed physicians.[2]
History
In 1908, Dr Nils Johanson (a Swedish immigrant and surgeon) and 10 of his fellow Swedish-Americans sold bonds to open Seattle's Swedish Hospital.[3]
Swedish was founded on June 1, 1910. In 1980, it absorbed Doctors Hospital and Seattle General Hospital. In 1992, Ballard Community Hospital became part of Swedish. Providence Seattle Medical Center, where the first live Internet broadcast of an open heart surgery was performed via the Virtual Operating Room in 1998, became part of Swedish Medical Center in 2000.[4] Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, Washington joined the system in 2010. In 2012, Swedish Health Services affiliated with Providence Health & Services.[5]
