Idea track listing

"Swan Song" is a song recorded by the Bee Gees and released as the closing track on the group's fifth album Idea on September 1968.[1]It was also released as the B-side of "I Started a Joke" in France.[2]The song's promotional video was released in 2006 on The Idea: TV Special 1968.[3] And on the video, Maurice Gibb playing a Rickenbacker 4001 and Vince Melouney playing a Gibson ES-335.

Recording

Along with "Really and Sincerely", the song was originally recorded on November 28, 1967 on the Horizontal sessions but it was rejected, and recorded again in November 29 (with "The Change Is Made" and "Out of Line"), But on December 13, they recorded again this song for the third time and that version was released.[4]

Barry Gibb recalls about the song:

'Swan Song' was about the end of everything. If this was the last song you ever sang, or if it's the last thing you ever did, you're gonna do it well. That's really the basic feeling behind that. I think 'Swan Song' is something that came from 'Words' It was another song with that feel, in that area.[5]
