Suryapet i/ˈsrjɑːptə/ (Telugu: సూర్యాపేట) (Urdu: سریاپتہ ) is a major town and municipality in Nalgonda district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Suryapet town has historical recognition as 'Gate Way of Telangana'.[1] It is sometimes referred as Bhanupuri (Telugu: భానుపురి). It lies on the National Highway 9 and is equidistant from the capital city of Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Suryapet is India's first 'Waste-Compliant'city.[2] Suryapet municipality has won Green Leaf Award for Best Garbage Disposal in 2007.[3] It has won many awards for its cleanliness from the Andhra Pradesh government as well as Indian government and got the Best Municipality award under BJP reign.

Geography

Suryapet or Suriapet is located at 17°09′00″N 79°37′00″E / 17.1500°N 79.6167°E / 17.1500; 79.6167.[4] It has an average elevation of 266 metres (873 ft).

History

This town has the traces of rich history. Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, and finally Nizams ruled it. Pillalamarri temples with intricately carved stone pillars stand testimony to the architectural style of the Kakatiya period. Trescoes and inscriptions tell the tales of the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty. Some temples and remains of fortified walls and buildings can be found near Undrugonda.

This town was once a small site for a group of inhabitants. At that time the name was "Bhanupuri". Later it was renamed to its current name.

Telangana Rebellion

To enhance its name and its legacy, there is another gem in the Suryapet crown. This town has the active participation in the Telangana Rebellion against Razakar of Nizam rulers. Some of the people who stood against Razakars are Bhimreddy Narasimha Reddy,Bikumalla Sathyam,Bommagani Dharma Bhiksham, Boddupally Singara Chary,Vardhelli Buchiramulu, Bandi Yadagiri,Dr.A.P.Vittal,Mallu Swarajyam,Mallu Venkata Narasimha Reddy,Rangiah,Bheemiah.

There were many poems to enlighten the common people about the revolt and its leaders. One such poem by Bandi Yadagiri, who penned the famous song " బండెనుక బండి కట్టి… ".

Topographical Features

The soil in and around the town is hard gravel soil. Elevation of the town varies from + 169 mtrs to 184 mtrs above main sea level. The natural slope of the town is from North to South. There are three tanks namely Pulla Reddy Tank, Chowdary Tank and Nallacheruvu Tank in the heart of the town. Musi left canal passes through the town from west to east irrigating fields in and around the town. The average ground water table is about 50 below ground level.

Climate

Under the Köppen climate classification, Suryapet experiences Tropical Wet and Dry Climate. The annual mean temperature is 36 °C .Monthly mean temperatures are 19–40 °C (66–104 °F).Summers (March–June) are hot and humid, with temperatures in the low 30s Celsius; during dry spells, maximum temperatures often exceed 45 °C in May and June. Winter lasts for only about two-and-a-half months, with seasonal lows dipping to 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) in December and January. May is the hottest month, with daily temperatures ranging from 35–43 °C (95–109 °F); January, the coldest month, has temperatures varying from 15–23 °C (59–73 °F). The highest recorded temperature is 51.02 °C (111.0 °F), and the lowest is 9 °C (48 °F).

Rains brought by the south-west summer monsoon lash Suryapet between June and September, supplying it with most of its annual rainfall of 821.0 mm . The highest total monthly rainfall, 180.0 mm, occurs in July .October and November also experiences increased rainfall from the North East Monsoon. Winter season starts in December and lasts through February. Temperatures range from a minimum of 18 °C and can reach 33 °C.

As of 2011 India census,[5] Suryapet had an urban metropolitan population of 1,06,524[6] Suryapet is the second most populous city in Nalgonda district the first one being Nalgonda town. Apart from the city population, it has a floating population of approximately 10,000 from the neighbouring villages daily. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Suryapet has an average literacy rate of 84.88%, higher than the national average of 74.04.%: male literacy is 91.18%, and female literacy is 78.74%. In Suryapet, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Civic Administration

Suryapet city is governed by Municipality and is situated in Suryapet Urban Region.[7] It was constituted in the year 1952, as Grade-III Municipality and at present this ULB has been upgraded to Grade-I Municipality consequent to the increase of population and area. The majority of people in this town are engaged in Commercial activities beside substantial agriculture work. The Commissioner is the chief executive Authority of the Municipality. It is also the Revenue Divisional Head Quarter. Suryapet Municipality was upgraded into Grade-II Municipality in the year 1984 and to Grade-I on 7 November 1998.It is divided into 41 municipal wards as special grade municipality. There are 44 notified slum areas

Achievements

  • Suryapet has attracted global attention for the transformation that has been brought by the 'effective solid waste management techniques adopted by the Suryapet Municipality.[8]
  • Suryapet secured the ISO 14001-2004 certificate for establishing and maintaining an environment-friendly system for solid waste disposal.[9] Suryapet is the first municipality in the country to receive such a certificate. The municipality bagged Greentech Foundation's Excellence Award and won the Supreme Court's appreciation for proper Solid Waste Management. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme lauded the initiative taken by the municipality as "good practice".

Culture and Festivals

Telugu is the language spoken by the majority in Suryapet. Prominent Hindu festivals celebrated in the region are Sankranti, Ugadi, Sri Ramanavami, Vinayaka Chavithi, Holi, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Dasara, Deepavali and Maha Sivaratri. Apart from these, regional festivals like Bathkamma and Bonalu are also celebrated.Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, Ramadan (ninth month of the Islamic calendar) Milad-un-Nabi (Mawlid) and Muharram (Day of Ashura) and Christians celebrate Christmas and Good Friday.

Suryapet is located 120 kilometres from Hyderabad,112 kilometres from Warangal,140 kilomeers from Vijayawada,60 kilometres from Khammam,90 kilometres from Janagam and 50 kilometres from Nalgonda.As it is not connected with Rail, passengers use bus to travel lo distant places. Suryapet is a major road junction. APSRTC operates buses from Suryapet to several places like Hyderabad/Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda,Karimnagar,Miryalaguda, Vishakapatnam, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Janagaon, Srisailam, Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh. Mumbai, Pune, in Maharashtra State and Bidar, Bangalore in Karnataka State. Suryapet depot is having larger fleet of buses.

APSRTC has three main bus stations in Suryapet:

  • Old Bus station – For ordinary buses which are going for nearest towns and villages
  • New Bus Station – For Express and Ordinary buses which are going for nearest towns
  • Express Bus station / Hi-Tech Bus station – Mainly for Garuda, Hi-tech and Luxury buses, which provide services to major cities and towns in the state and main cities outside the state of Andhra Pradesh. There are many auto rickshaws available to commute with in the town.

Over the years, there is a demand for construction of new Railway line passing through Suryapet. But it could not be a reality. Nearest Railway stations are Nalgonda, Khammam, Jangaon. Nearest Railway Junction is Kazipet. The nearest international airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad located 132 km away from Suryapet.

In and around the city there are many places to worship.Temples of Hanuma, Shiva, Santhoshi Maatha, Saibaba, Venkateswara, veera badra swamy,dandu maisamma, Ramalingamanthula, swamy Krishna and many mosques and churches are always open to the religious folks.The famous temple in Suryapet is Venkateswara Temple, Sai baba Temple, Ayappa Swamy Temple held at bypass road, Ramalingeswara Swamy temple located at VidyaNagar.

  • Old Shivalayam Temple: This is a historical temple in the old city.
  • Hanuman Temple : This well known temple is located in Rajeev Nagar, near M.R.O Office. It is very famous from nearly about 40 years.
  • Church: Suryapet Church is one of the biggest and oldest churches in the region.
  • Dandu Maisamma Temple: Situated in Nimmikal. Famous and Powerful Temple.This is situated10  kilometres from Suryapet.

PillalaMarri

PillalaMarri is one of the oldest Lord Shiva temples which is considered to be 1000 years old. Pillalamarri, being the birthplace of the famous Telugu poet Pillamarri Pina Virabhadrudu, is not only historically but also culturally and religiously significant.

Musi Reservoir

Moosi reservoir is 17 km away from suryapet. It is a local tourist attraction especially when the gates are opened during monsoon season. The reservoir provides water for irrigation and as well as drinking water to suryapet town. Fishing is done using professional nets. Every year fishing rights are auctioned to highest bidder. Fixed amount of money is paid to all male members in each family in the surrounding villages to compensate for their livelihood.

Penpahad

There is one of the oldest siva temple in the village where some wonders occur there regularly on the occasion of any special day.

Undrugonda

Undrugonda is a Devotional place, famous for approximately 1000 year old Laxmi Narasimha Swamy temple. It is a hilly area. The god here is believed to be powerful. Not only Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple, but also many other temples are in and around Undrugonda.

Durajpalli Jathara

For the past 400 years, it is being celebrated at Lingamanthula Swamy(Lord Shiva) Temple in Durajpally, a suburb of Suryapet. It is one of the biggest Jatharas in India. Every two years in February nearly ten lakh people visit this carnival. It is second biggest Jathara in Telangana only after Samakka Sarakka Jathara.

Yendlapally

Yendlapally is a very beautiful and big village in Suryapet mandal, with lots of greenery, lakes and canals, and famous for its lush paddy fields and the two seasons of monsoons which support cultivation of rice. The fields which stretch across the length and breadth, and famous for Ancient Shivalayam (1200 years old), Every year 'SHIVARATHRI THIRANALA', Shivalayam is situated at bank of Musi River and in the middle of paddy fields, and 'Saibaba' temple,'Anjaneya Swamy' temple, there is a big port named Kota Buruju, constructed as a strategic tower with big stones by the rulers of the Kakatiya Empires. This villages is just 12 kilometres (15 minutes drive) from SURYAPET Town.

Palair

Pallair Reservoir in Khammam district 25 kilometres from Suryapet provides delightful experience to its visitors.

Narayanagudem

Narayanagudem ( Nagulapahad/Dubbagudem ) village is about 18 km south of Suryapet, famous for its temples. There are two Ancient temples (Trilingeswara Aalayam (Shivalayam) and Veerabhadreswara Aalayam) in this village, founded by the "Reddy Rajas" in the Kakatiya's era.They got the amazing art and beautiful sculptures carved on the black stone.These two temples are similar to the Warangal's "Thousand pillar temple" and Pillalamarri Temple. These temples are famous for SHIVARATHRI 'Jatara' conducted every year.
