Sunway Group (MYX: 4308) also known as Sunway Holdings Incorporated Berhad commenced operations in 1986, mainly to develop the Bandar Sunway township in Petaling Jaya. Following the success of the township, the Group has since grown and diversified into property investment, leisure and entertainment, hospitality and healthcare although always with property development as its core business and key contributor to profitability.

Sunway Group is led by its founder, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah. He is the current Chairman and sits on the board of the Federation of Public Listed Companies, The National Kidney Foundation, The Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Liver Foundation and the Malaysian Business Council. The managing director of Sunway Group is Mr Yau Kok Seng who assumes day-to-day management of the conglomerate's activities.

Group structure

The parent company of Sunway Group is Sunway Holdings Incorporated Berhad. It is listed on Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad since 16 February 1984. It changed its name from Sunway Holdings Sdn Bhd (SWH) to Sungei Way Holdings Berhad on 13 February 1983 and assumed its present name on 23 December 1999.

The other publicly listed subsidiary includes Sunway Infrastructure Berhad and Sunway City Berhad. The main activities of Sunway Infrastructure Berhad is managing toll road concessions and Sunway City Berhad manages portfolio of property and real estate investments.

Sri Lanka

In September 2010 it was announced that Sunway is partnering with Sri Lanka-based Dasa Tourist Complex Pte Ltd to develop a mixed-use project with an estimated value of RM250mil. SunwayMas will hold a 65% share of the development, while Dasa Tourist will have a 35% stake. The mixed development, in Colombo city, will comprise at least 318,000 sq ft (29,500 m2) of residential units and 60,000 sq ft (5,600 m2) of commercial unit space.[1]

Notable subsidiaries

Most notable subsidiaries located close to the headquarters in Bandar Sunway. These include two main hotels: Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa and the Pyramid Tower Hotel. Other tourism related facilities include the mega shopping and entertainment mall known as Sunway Pyramid, a theme park known as Sunway Lagoon and many beverage and entertainment outlets and other leisure facilities. Bandar Sunway also includes higher education facilities such as Monash University. Formerly known as Monash University Sunway Campus Malaysia Sdn Bhd., Sunway Group is the part owner of the Campus. Monash University Malaysia is a private tertiary institution catering mainly to local students. The Sunway Group is also the parent company of Sunway Education Group of institutions and Sunway University which provides homegrown university degrees and diplomas to Malaysian students. The Sunway Group is also the parent company of Totalrubber Ltd, an industrial plastics and rubber supplier based in Hallam, Australia.

Wonderland Sydney

From 1997 until its closure in 2004, Sunway Group owned and operated Wonderland Sydney, a theme park in New South Wales, Australia. Dwindling popularity and public liability insurance costs were blamed for the closure. A small number of rides were moved to Sunway Lagoon, while most ended up being demolished or sold. The park's land was eventually sold and is now a business park.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa is one of the largest hotel developments in Greater Kuala Lumpur, integrating a complex of five hotels with 1,234 guestrooms, suites, luxury villas and serviced residences.
