Sumithra is an Indian actress. She had appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages. She is best known for her roles as mother after the 90s.[1]

Early life

Sumithra was born on 24 November 1953 to Ragavan Nair and Janaki at Thrissur, Kerala.[2] She has three brothers, her father was working in an oil refining company. When she was doing her schooling she learnt dance from Murugappan Master, who was the guide to K.R Vijaya on that time. Sumithra is good classical dancer. Though her mother tongue is Malayalam, she knows Tamil, Telgu, Kannada, Hindi and English very well.

Sumithra started her kollywood career at her 19 years in the movie "Mirthachala' in 1974, Director A.P Raj is the first director who notice sumithra's talent.

Sumithra acted as heroine with Rajini and Kamal as well as she acted as mother to both of them.[3]

Sumithra made her debut in Nirmalayam. She has acted in over 200 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages. In Tamil, Avalum Penn Thaane (1974) was her first movie. Later in 1975 she made her debut Kannada movie Mugiyada Kathe which had a popular song "Kangalu Vandane Helide". She has acted with leading heroes like Vishnuvardhan, Rajesh in Kannada, Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Sivakumar, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in Tamil. She's performed supporting roles in hundreds of Kannada, Tamil Malayalam,and Telugu movies.[4]

Family

She is married to notable Kannada film director D. Rajendra Babu and has two daughters. Her elder daughter Umashankari made her entry into movies through Kannada movie Uppi Dada M.B.B.S. as heroine and acted in few movies. She made her small screen appearance through Kannada mega serial Chikkamma in the lead role, which is telecast on Udaya TV. Her second daughter Nakshatra debuted as lead actress in Tamil movie Doo.[5]
