Susan "Sue" Rose is an American television animator, producer and writer. She is best known for co-creating the character Fido Dido with Joanna Ferrone. Fido Dido is an animated character that was used in PepsiCo products and CBS's Saturday morning lineup in early 1990s.[1] The character's popularity led her to work in the children's television industry, on series such as Angela Anaconda, Pepper Ann and Unfabulous.
Early life
Rose was born on July 2, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas, the middle of three children. Her French-American mother, Eleanor Rose (née Sinclair), worked as a schoolteacher, and her Irish-American father, Burton "Burt" Rose, was a sharecropper. Rose attended Topeka High School from 1968 to 1972, where she excelled in literature and art classes. Upon graduating, she attended Northwestern University, where she pursued but did not complete a degree in Communication Studies.
Animation career
Rose and friend Joanna Perrone first developed the character Fido Dido in 1985 on a napkin in a restaurant, although it was Perrone who named him "Fido Dido."[2] They later stenciled Fido on T-shirts with the credo: "Fido is for Fido, Fido is against no one".[3]
Fido Dido was licensed to PepsiCo in around 1988, but the character did not receive much attention or popularity until the early 1990s on numerous products, particularly stationery. Later, he was replaced with Cool Spot as the brand mascot.
Rose and Perrone were able to parlay Fido Dido's popularity in Canada into a job in Canadian television, creating the series Angela Anaconda, a cut-out animation show that aired on Canada's channel Teletoon before making the jump to Fox Family in the United States. Rose was nominated for two Daytime Emmys for her work on the series.[4]
After Angela Anaconda was canceled in 2002, Rose created the British/Australian childrens' show The Sleepover Club before venturing into American TV to create the Nickelodeon teen sitcom Unfabulous. Rose sneaks an image of Fido Dido into the background of every episode of every show she's worked on as a fun easter egg for Fido fans.
Personal life
Rose married piano tuner Brian Davis in 1988. She is an outspoken critic of George W. Bush.
