Suape port
Suape Port is a Brazilian International Port located in the city of Ipojuca state of Pernambuco, among the municipalities of Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho, inside the Recife metropolitan area and distant 40 km South of the capital (Recife). Suape serves ships 365 days a year without any restriction with regard to tidal schedules. Suape is one of the most important harbour and container terminals in northeast of Brazil playing an important role in the economy of the state of Pernambuco.[1] Suape has started in the 21st Century to be Pernambuco's motive power toward development. Huge national and international investments are being attracted by its logistic qualities, of which, until 2010, more than US$ 10 billion dollars are expected.
Origins
The complex was designed by then the state Governor Francisco de Moura. Its name originates from Suape beach, the most southern beach of Cabo de Santo Agostinho. However, the port is actually in the municipality of Ipojuca. Its design is based on Port-Industry integrated system used in countries such as France and Japan. The construction of the port was scheduled to operate fuels and bulk cereals, replacing the Recife port. On November 7 of 1978 a law state created the company Suape Industrial Port Complex to manage the development of the project and the port itself. Today, it is one of the largest ports in Brazil and has been considered the most technologically advanced as well. Its area of influence covers the whole state of Pernambuco and larges parts of Alagoas and Paraiba states.
Port Structure
Suape Port, serves ships 365 days a year without any restrictions with regard to tidal schedules. To assist in the docking operation of the ships, the port offers a monitoring system and laser ship docking system that enables effective, secure control and upholds the same technical standards as the most important ports across the globe. The port moves over than 8.4 million tons in 2008[2] of cargo a year (has increased 7 times since 1992). The liquid transfer (petroleum by-products, chemical products, ethanol, vegetable oils, etc.) constitutes more than 80% of the movement. The port can serve ships of up to 170,000 DWT and operational draft of 14.50 m. With 27 km² of backport, the internal and external ports offer the necessary conditions for serving large ships. The access canal has 5,000 m extension, 300 m width and 15.5 m depth.[3] More than 96 Companies from almost all industries are already installed or trying to get installed in Suape, including a Petrobras Refinary, the largest Ship Builder in South America (Atlantico Sul) and a large Petrochemical Company.
Accessibility
- Highways
The Port has access by Federal road BR 101 and state road PE 060. Also, at 35 km Northwest interconnect with BR 232, Federal highway which criss-cross the state in the West direction.
- Airways
The Guararapes International Airport from Recife, is located 25 km North. The Maceió airport is located 210 km South, João Pessoa airport is located 160 km North and; it is located from the state airports such as Caruaru (160 km W), and Petrolina (725 km W).
- Railways
The general importance of the port for all Northeast region (NE) will increase at the end of 2010 with the completion of the Transnordestina (main goods NE trainline with 1,800 km/1,115 mi extent), which will cross 3 and connect 7 States (34 Cities just in Pernambuco) goods/products directly with Suape Port Pe and Pecem Port Ce), with estimated costs of 4.5 BR$. The city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho has also a diesel train called the South train, which connects directly with Recife but is just for passenger service.
Logistic Center
Due essentially to Suape port, the international airport and geographic center location in the northeastern region of Brazil, Recife is considered one of the biggest Logistic Centers in Brazil. Logistic and Communications Economic sector employees 4%[4] of the Recife workforce and over than 9% in the Metropolitan Area.Those numbers has tendency to grow up with the conclusion of Transnordestina in 2010. Suape has started in the 21st Century to be Pernambuco's motive power toward development.
