Launched in 2010, Street League Skateboarding (SLS) is an international competitive series in professional skateboarding. The league features twenty-four professional street skateboarders competing for the largest prize purse in the history of skateboarding,[1] and was founded by professional skateboarder and entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek.
History
The idea for SLS first arose when Dyrdek reviewed the state of professional street skateboarding competitions more than seven years ago and was unhappy with his conclusion. Dyrdek identified significant flaws in the way that skateboarding contests were designed and run, and therefore proceeded to develop the SLS concept.
The inaugural year of Street League featured a three-stop arena tour that began at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on August 28, 2010. The other venues for the inaugural tour were the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, on September 11, 2010, and the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on September 25, 2010.
The 2011 Super Crown World Champion was Sean Malto, who upset the competitive domination of Nyjah Huston for his first Street League win and the $200,000 first place prize.
In 2012, the champion Nyjah Huston won US$200,000, the championship Nixon watch and ring set from Nixon Watches, and a Chevy Sonic vehicle. As of May 19, 2013, Huston has won more prize money than any other skateboarder in history.[2]
In May 2013, the GoPro camera company was announced as the official camera sponsor of the 2013 SLS international tour. GoPro content will be featured in the broadcasts of the domestic American events, and the cameras will deliver footage of course previews and real-time impact highlights. GoPro sponsors SLS contestants Ryan Sheckler and Sean Malto.[3]
The 2013 Super Crown World Champion, Chris Cole, also earned his first career SLS win earlier in 2013 at the Street League at X Games stop in Munich, Germany. At the championship, Cole earned US$200,000 for his win, along with the custom Nixon championship watch and ring. Huston and Luan Oliveira placed second and third respectively.[4]
Another SLS standout,Paul Rodriguez, won his second SLS stop in Portland, Oregon, U.S. in July, 2013.[5]
In 2013, the Street League Skateboarding Foundation (SLSF) was established with the goal of increasing global participation in skateboarding. The Foundation seeks to foster healthier communities by promoting and providing the inherent benefits of skateboarding to all facets of society in addition to helping skateboarding grow though community outreach, support, and guidance. The Foundation assists municipalities and non-profits with the design, development, and construction of legal Skate Plazas as well as assists with the creation of community and educational programs that promote and encourage the sport of skateboarding. [6] An extension of Street League Skateboarding, “Street League Skateboarding Certified Skate Parks” (SLSCSP) will be popping up across the US. The first three plazas were built in 2013. Street League Certified Skate Plazas will eventually become the locations for Street League amateur and televised qualifier contests. Locations include Erie, Colorado; the Kennesaw Skatepark in Kennesaw, GA; and Lake Havasu City, AZ. Design and build partners include Site Design Group and California Skateparks. Street League Skateboarding is dedicated to replicating past SLS plazas for the public to enjoy for forever more. These parks are considered by some to be the best and safest in the world.[7]
Overview
Street League features twenty of the world's top professional street skateboarders, who compete against each other and accumulate championship points that designate rank throughout the season. The contestants accumulate points at each pre-championship stop; only the top eight ranking contestants are invited to the championship event.
In 2010, SLS was described by cable television network ESPN as the "first-ever and only professional skateboarding league."[8]
The Street League prize purse is the largest in the history of competitive professional skateboarding,[1] totaling US$1.6 million in 2011.
Unique characteristics of the competition include the contest's original format, the ISX instant scoring system, the indoor concrete course (described as a "skate plaza"), and the amount of total prize money
ISX technology
SLS introduced the ISX (Instant Scoring Experience) to competitive skateboarding events.[9] The unique scoring format scores each trick independently, in contrast to all other professional contests that grade on overall impression of a full run or series of tricks performed within a certain time frame.[10] ISX is a partnership between MXi, Dialsmith, and SLS.[9]
Course design and construction
California Skateparks designs and builds the Street League courses.[9]
ESPN partnership
Street League signed a multi-year partnership with ESPN for worldwide distribution of the contest footage in more than 198 countries.[citation needed]
