Stratfield Mortimer is a village and civil parish, just south of Reading, in the English county of Berkshire and district of West Berkshire. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 3,584.^[1]

Location

Strictly speaking, the village of Stratfield Mortimer sits at the foot of Mortimer Hill which rises westward from the Foudry Brook. The much larger, and better known, village of Mortimer Common, commonly called Mortimer, is at the top of the hill. Mortimer is bounded by Wokefield to the North and Beech Hill to the East.

Amenities

The village includes the Cinnamon Tree Indian restaurant (formerly the Fox and Horn and prior to that, the Railway Inn public house), St Mary's Church of England parish church, Mortimer St Mary's Junior School and the headquarters of the Berkshire Federation of Women's Institutes. The Foudry Brook is crossed at the bottom of the village at Tun Bridge. The Lockram Brook flows through the middle of the parish and there is much woodland in the area, including Starvale Woods, Wokefield Common and Holden Firs.

Transport

Stratfield Mortimer is served by Mortimer railway station on the Reading to Basingstoke Line.

Mortimer Common

The larger village of Mortimer Common has a surgery, a bank, a post office, the Church of England parish church of St John the Evangelist. Next to the church is St John's Infant School. There are also three public houses: The Turner's Arms, the Victoria Arms and the Horse and Groom. The three main roads in Mortimer are The Street, West End Road and Victoria Road. A new cricket pavilion is being constructed on the common.

Mortimer West End

As Stratfield Mortimer used to be a cross-county parish, the Hampshire part was known as Mortimer West End. It is now a civil parish in its own right.
