Website Project Overview

The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge is a bridge currently under construction in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. When complete, it will cross the Rideau River to connect Strandherd Drive in Barrhaven and Earl Armstrong Road in Riverside South.

History

The idea for a bridge in this location was first brought up in 1993 as a road bridge. The location was later revisited as the location for a light rail crossing for the O-Train, but that extension plan was cancelled.[1] In 2010, the city, provincial, and national governments invested equal amounts totaling $48 million in building the bridge.[2] The original contractor hired, ConCreate USL, went into receivership about 60% of the way complete with the project, and the City of Ottawa hired a new contractor, Horseshoe Hill Construction, to finish the remainder of the project.[3]

Project status

The project is expected to be completed in September 2014.[4] The contractor went bankrupt, the city's bonding company won't accelerate work and the completion date has been put off until September 2014. The original opening date was in 2012.[4]
