Stord is an island in the county of Hordaland, Norway. Located in the district of Sunnhordland, the island is covered by Stord (southern part) and Fitjar (northern part) municipalities. The largest settlements are Leirvik, Sagvåg and Fitjar. Stord has an area of 241 square kilometres (93 sq mi).
Fitjar
Fitjar is the village that lies on the northern part of the Island of Stord.
Early history
The area around Fitjar has been settled since the Stone Age. At that time the sea was 10–15 metres (33–49 ft) higher than today, which means that it went into Storavatnet(Largewater lake) and far up Fitjar river. The mild climate of the last ice age meant that much of the area was covered by forest, most probably oak, ash and lime, and the area was rich with wildlife, deer and wild boar. Archaeologists said there have been people on Fitjar in 10,000 years, and it's made many discoveries of stone tools around the Fitjar, but these strains were essentially itinerant and was here only for periods of time. By Rimbareid was nevertheless found a Stone Age dwellings under a cairn, which was examined by archaeologist E. de Lange in 1906. This residence is probably from the late stone age, but can also be from the early Bronze Age, since residue showed a square house, while the round house was more common in the stone age.

Stord
Early history
