Stockfish is an open source UCI chess engine, developed by Tord Romstad, Joona Kiiski and Marco Costalba and licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3. Release versions and development versions are available as C++ source code, and also as precompiled versions for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux 32-bit/64-bit. It can use up to thirty-two CPU cores in multiprocessor systems.[1] The maximum size of the transposition tables is eight gigabytes. Stockfish implements an advanced alpha-beta search and uses bitboards.
In all major computer chess rankings Stockfish is in the top three.[2][3][4]
The program originated from another open source program by Romstad named Glaurung. Stockfish was forked from the 2.1 version of Glaurung; the latest Glaurung version 2.2 was released in December 2008 but is no longer developed. Currently Stockfish is being developed on a public distributed testing framework.[5]
In 2013 Stockfish finished runner-up at both nTCEC Seasons 1 and 2 with Superfinal scores of 23–25 first against Houdini 3 and later against Komodo 1142.
Stockfish has been a very popular engine for various platforms. On the Desktop, it is a default chess engine bundled with the Internet Chess Club interface programs BlitzIn and Dasher. On the mobile platform, it has been ported to the Stockfish app, SmallFish, and Droidfish.
