Steven Halpern is a New Age musician.

Early career

While attending the University of Buffalo, Halpern visited the New York City jazz scene of the 1960s on holidays and during the summer, and also visited San Francisco to check out the jazz and lifestyle scene there. Halpern's life changed when he studied with master musicians Ron Carter, Archie Shepp and Joe Ford in 1968. Although he began exploring the healing power of music while a grad student at Buffalo, he was was extended an invitation to the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1970. When that offer fell through, Helpern took it as a sign to focus on the healing path. In 1972, Halpern taught music at La Entrada Middle School in Menlo Park, CA and subsequently worked as a traveling music teacher for the Palo Alto CA school system.[1]

He began exploring the idea of creating music entirely for the purpose of relaxation, which he called "anti-frantic alternative" music.[2] He began creating music which did not adhere to traditional Western tonality, but which instead consisted of static, minimalist pieces for electric piano inspired by Eastern music. He is a proponent of theories which emphasize the healing properties of music.

Since his first record of new age music was released in 1975, he has recorded more than 50 albums. The most commercially successful of these was 2000's Deja-Blues, which reached #18 on the U.S. Billboard Top New Age Albums chart.[3] He is also the author of two books, Tuning the Human Instrument and Sound Health.

Halpern was also an inaugural member of the Independent Music Awards' judging panel to support independent artists.[4]
