Steve True (born November 13, 1954), better known as Steve "The Homer" True, is an American sportscaster from South Bend, Indiana. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Arizona, and Indiana University South Bend. His father was a professor at the University of Notre Dame before becoming a professional speaker. He spoke for nearly 50 years as "The World's Greatest Edutainer".[1]

Career

True is currently at 540 ESPN as co-host of the "Homer and Thunder" show heard each afternoon from 3–6 pm. He is also in his 20th season as play-by-play voice of Marquette basketball. He joined Good Karma Broadcasting in September 2005 as the host of the afternoon show on WAUK 540. He has been a sportscaster in Milwaukee since 1989. He started at WISN (AM) radio as the morning sports anchor, host of a nightly sports show, "The World's Greatest Sportstalk Show", and play-by-play voice for Marquette basketball. In 1991, he joined WISN-TV as the morning sports anchor and eventually became the 5 pm sports anchor. He won an Emmy for local sportscasting in 1996. He also hosted "Pack Attack", a live weekly show that featured Packers players including Brett Favre. He worked at WISN-TV from 1991–2003.

Early life

True was an outstanding tennis player growing up, because, he says, "I wasn't good enough at any other sport."[1] He played tennis at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He returned home to South Bend to finish his accounting degree at the Indiana University South Bend. True was the assistant head tennis coach at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend.[citation needed] He was a finalist for the head tennis coach's job at Indiana University, but did not get it. After attending Midwestern Broadcast College, in Chicago, Illinois, he got into radio.[1] He has been reported to have destroyed Packer RT Mark Tausher in a singles match, adding to the legend.

Prior radio career

Prior to working with ESPN 540, Steve True was an on-air personality with numerous radio stations, including WIXK in New Richmond, Wisconsin, KCOW in Alliance, Nebraska, WIBA-FM in Madison, Wisconsin, WTDY in Madison, and WISN.[1]

True's program is also simulcasted in Madison on WAUK's sister sports talk radio station, FM 100.5 ESPN WTLX.

Well-known show segments

  • True conducts daily interviews with Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com and Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel He speaks weekly with sports memorabilia dealer Jeff Lemieux.
  • True holds a once-weekly trivia contest in which a caller competes against WISN-TV sportscaster and ESPN Milwaukee colleague Dan Needles, styled as "Rain Man" for his strong performances, in a two-minute, fifteen-question trivia challenge.
  • He is also known for sayings which he calls "Homerisms," The first rule of Homerism- I am a Homer, but I am not an idiot. Other Homerisms: Upsets are for losers. No donkey ever won the Kentucky Derby. Anything can happen, but it usually doesn't. You can never have too many Escalades in the garage.
  • When Brett Favre left the Packers, True ran an ongoing segment called "Brett Favre 4Ever", a daily spoof of Wisconsin's former hero.
  • During the Tiger Woods scandal, his update segments were titled "Keep Your Putter In Your Bag."

Marquette University men's basketball play-by-play

True is the current play-by-play man for the Marquette University men's basketball team. True is known for giving the Marquette players unique nicknames that matches their playing style and life stories. Successfully predicted that Dwyane Wade would be a superstar after a Wade performance in a Marquette tournament win at the Great Alaska Shootout. Wade had three levels of play: D-Wade, Micro-Wade, and Tidal-Wade. Homer also said about Wade that even when he was bad, he was good. His use of "Oh Baby" is his trademark saying. Marquette games are broadcast on his current station, ESPN 540 WAUK in Milwaukee.[2]

Charitable Works

True is widely known in the Milwaukee area for his charitable works, Emceeing numerous events throughout the year. He is involved in the MACC Fund and numerous religious charities associated with Marquette University and other religious schools and programs. Known for his auctioneer abilities.

Accident

True was involved in an accident on his birthday, November 13, 2013 in Milwaukee as he was hit by a drunken driver. True was in critical condition but made a full recovery, surprisingly only missing a week off the air. True also was back working Marquette games after only a week, missing only 2 games. [3]
