Stereophile is a monthly magazine that focuses on high end audio equipment, such as loudspeakers and amplifiers, and audio-related news, such as online audio streaming. It was founded in 1962 by J. Gordon Holt.
As of 2010, the editor is John Atkinson, who joined the magazine in May 1986. Stereophile is published in New York by Source Interlink Media, publisher of special interest magazines.
Notable features include their annual "Records to Die For" section, where each editor and writer reviews two outstanding albums of their choice, and the bi-annual "Recommended Components" issue in which audio equipment which has been reviewed in the recent past are classified as "A, B, C or D" level components - A being the most highly recommended.
There are numerous other features which are of great interest to many music and audio equipment enthusiasts. Like all highly specialized "fringe enthusiast" magazines there is much discussion and conflict on any number of issues which are perceived as entirely without merit by the non-enthusiast majority.
