Stephen McPartland[1] is a British Conservative Party politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Stevenage at the 2010 general election.

Early life

Born in Liverpool on 9 August 1976 McPartland studied for his first degree in History at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1997. He studied for an MSc in Technology Management at Liverpool John Moores University the following year. McPartland was the Director of Membership for British American Business (the US Chamber of Commerce), based in London.

McPartland commenced his political career in 1999 in Warrington where he managed a range of local council, Parliamentary and European election campaigns, before moving to Hertfordshire in 2001 to work as a Campaign Manager.

Parliamentary career

McPartland’s political interests include: health care - with a particular focus on cancer treatment and respiratory diseases, education, science and technology including satellite technology, international trade, policing, addiction treatment, urban regeneration, and government procurement of IT projects.[1]

McPartland represents his interests in Parliament through his involvement as a member of:

  • 2011 Education Bill Committee and participated in all stages of the Bill’s passage through Parliament[2]
  • All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs),[3] including:
    • Chairman, Furniture Industry APPG,
    • Chairman, Respiratory Health APPG,
    • Vice-Chairman, Parliamentary Space Committee,
    • Chairman, Child and Youth Crime APPG,
    • Treasurer, Pneumonia APPG and
    • Chairman, Literacy APPG.

McPartland has secured over £300 million from the government for infrastructure investment in Stevenage for housing, schools and the Lister hospital, which will benefit residents of the constituency and the surrounding areas. He is leading a campaign for a satellite Radiotherapy Unit at the Lister Hospital. McPartland works closely with North Hertfordshire College and spends time with local businesses to bridge the gap between education and employment for young people locally.

Other Activities

McPartland is a Trustee of The Living Room Charity, which offers a wide range of free addiction treatment services and a Patron of the Turn the Tide Charity. Both are locally-based charity organisations founded in Stevenage. McPartland is also a Patron of Trailblazers, a national charity that reduces re-offending among young people through providing volunteer mentors.[4]

Personal life

McPartland lives in Stevenage with his wife Emma, who is a teacher at a local primary school.
