Stephen F. Hale

Stephen F. Hale (1816–1862) was an American politician and military officer. A resident of Alabama, he signed the Confederate States Constitution and was later commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate States Army. He also served as Alabama's secession commissioner to Kentucky in an effort to convince the latter state to join the rebellion. He was wounded at the Battle of Gaines' Mill in Virginia and died soon after in Richmond. Hale County, Alabama is named in his honor.
