Steffisburg is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Geography
Steffisburg has an area of 13.5 km2 (5.2 sq mi). Of this area, 43.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 27.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 26.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.6%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]
Demographics
Steffisburg has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 15,515.[1] As of 2007, 8.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 12.5%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (92.5%), with Italian being second most common ( 1.2%) and Albanian being third ( 1.2%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (19.6%), the FDP (13.8%) and the Green Party (11.3%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60.3% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.2%. In Steffisburg about 77.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Steffisburg has an unemployment rate of 2.23%. As of 2005, there were 171 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 55 businesses involved in this sector. 1873 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 122 businesses in this sector. 2901 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 363 businesses in this sector.[3]
