Stefano Pessina (born 1941)[2] is an Italian businessman.[1] He has served as the Executive Chairman of Alliance Boots since 2007.[3][4]

Biography

Early life

Pessina was born in Pescara and grew up between Milan, Como and Naples.[2]

He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in nuclear physics.[5]

Career

In 1977, he took over his family's pharmaceutical wholesaler in Naples and turned it into Alliance Santé, a Franco-Italian pharmaceutical wholesale group.[1][3] In 1997, it merged with Alliance UniChem, and he joined its Board of Directors.[3][4] From 2001 to 2004, he served as its Chief Executive.[3] He served as Executive Deputy Chairman, and later as Executive Chairman.[3]

He has sat on the Board of Directors of Walgreens since August 2012.[3][6] He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Consumer Goods Forum.[7]

Personal life

He has been separated from his wife Barbara since 2011, and they have two children.[1] Since at least 2007, he has been the partner of Ornella Barra.[2] As of March 2013, he is worth US$6.4 billion, owning about 8% of Walgreens and about 18% of Alliance Boots.[1]

He has lived in Monte Carlo, Monaco, for many years.[2]
