Stefan Reinartz (born 1 January 1989) is a German footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Career

Reinartz was born in Engelskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. He came through the ranks at Bayer Leverkusen and but did not play any games for them in the 2008–09 season. He made his professional debut in the Second Division while on loan with 1. FC Nuremberg on 9 February 2009 when he started a match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.[1]

After returning from Nuremberg, Reinartz was given a chance to prove himself and made his competitive debut for Bayer on 31 July 2009 against SV Babelsberg in the German Cup. During the 2009–10 season, he eventually cemented his place as a holding midfielder and scored his first senior goal on 6 November in the 4–0 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

He started out as first choice at the start of the 2006 U17 European Championship qualifying campaign and was in the squad that took fourth place in the tournament. After losing his place to Christopher Schorch for a short spell, he regained it and became a regular for the U19's. He started all matches at the 2008 European Championships and helped Germany to the title. He was a regular for the U21's in their bid to make the 2011 European Championships.
