Star 104.5 (call sign: 2GOS) is a commercial radio station based in Gosford, Australia. It is run by DMG Radio Australia.
History
During negotiations in 2002 to enter the Central Coast market through a deal with RG Capital, then owner of incumbent stations 101.3 Sea FM and 2GO, DMG Radio won the licence to the third commercial FM licence in Gosford[1] with a $13.5 million bid, with the original intention to sell 50% of the licence to RG Capital, and take control of the Sea FM station in exchange for RG Capital receiving Bendigo stations 3BO FM and Star 91.9.[2]
However, in December 2002, the deal fell through,[3] leaving DMG with complete control of the new licence and RG Capital holding on to their existing stations.
Star FM launched on 16 March 2004 with a format dubbed 'Rock Stars' and a 'never more than 4 ads in a row' promise,[4] similar to the 2 ads in a row format used at the time by DMG's Nova stations.
Shortly after the launch, Macquarie Regional RadioWorks (now Southern Cross Austereo) purchased most of DMG's regional radio stations in a $194m deal,[5] however a previous acquisition of RG Capital meant that Star 104.5 would take them over the two station limit per market, resulting in DMG maintaining ownership of the station, while other stations in the network kept the Star FM branding under the new ownership.
Reception
The station has received mixed success in the local ratings over the years, coming third in the June 2012 ratings,[6] amidst frequent changes in on air personalities and programming.
