From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matthew Stanley McKenzie (17 May 1890 – 8 December 1915) was an Australian first-class cricketer and Australian rules footballer.
A right-handed opening batsman, he played five first-class matches for Tasmania between 1910 and 1913.[1]
He was recruited by Australia rules club Carlton in 1914, playing 14 VFL games, including a Preliminary Final, and kicking 6 goals. The Tasmanian had represented his state at the 1911 Adelaide Carnival, while playing with Launceston.
McKenzie signed with the AIF as a medical orderly during the war (he was a Sergeant with the 1st Australian Clearing Hospital, First A.I.F.) and spent some time at Gallipoli before being moved to Alexandria in Egypt. He suffered appendicitis while in Egypt and lost his life.
