Stabskapitänleutnant

Stabskapitänleutnant

Staff captain lieutenant (German: Stabskapitänleutnant) is an OF-2 military rank in the German Navy for specialist officers. The rank is senior to the regular OF-2 rank of Kapitänleutnant (Lt). Instead of being promoted to the rank of Korvettenkapitän (OF-3, LtCdr), specialist officers are usually promoted to the rank of Stabskapitänleutnant and given the salary of a Korvettenkapitän. Its rank insignia are two stripes with two half stripes between them.

According to NATO STANAG 2116 Stabskapitänleutnant is given the rank code OF-2, same as German Navy rank of Kapitänleutnant, equal to the Commonwealth or US rank of lieutenant. However, Stabskapitänleutnant undeniably is senior to a regular OF-2 Kapitänleutnant and in fact has the same pay rank as Korvettenkapitän (OF-3). Since the German rank of Korvettenkapitän for its part is considered slightly senior to a Commonwealth or US OF-3 lieutenant commander (STANAG 2116 gives the correct translation as "Commander (Junior grade)"), the rank of Stabskapitänleutnant is actually closer to OF-3 than to OF-2 level.[1]

The German Bundeswehr army rank equivalent is Stabshauptmann.
