Spur Corporation (doing business as Spur Steak Ranches) (JSE: SUR) is a steakhouse franchise restaurant chain originating from South Africa. Its menu mainly features beef burgers, steaks and ribs, but also includes salads, chicken, seafood and vegetarian options. The restaurants also sell a range of sauces and other condiments under its own brand. The head office of Spur Corporation is in Century City, Cape Town.[2]

Despite its South African origin, Spur uses Native American themes extensively, both in its marketing and decor. The restaurant brands itself as "the official restaurant of the South African family"; as such, most Spur restaurants include a children's play area.

The company was founded by Allen Ambor (who is still the company's executive chairman) in 1967,[3] when he opened the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town.[4]

Since then, Spur has grown into an international restaurant chain with 240 South African and 29 international outlets, including restaurants in Australia,[4] Botswana, Ireland,[4] Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom,[4] and Zimbabwe. The chain also operates a restaurant at the Cape Town Airport.[5]

In the 2008/09 financial year, the company had a turnover of ZAR 326.77 million.

Panarottis Pizza Pasta

The company also owns the Panarotti’s pizza and pasta restaurant chain. This chain was started in 1989[4] and has 49 South African and 6 international outlets.[6] In addition, the Spur Group purchased a 60% shareholding in John Dory’s Fish and Grill in 2004.[4] John Dory's is a KwaZulu-Natal Province-based franchise with 22 outlets.[7]
