Springvale is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Springvale, on the Pakenham and Cranbourne railway lines. Springvale is classed as a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zone 2.

Station overview

Facilities

Springvale is located at the eastern end of the Springvale Road level crossing, with station access from Springvale, Lightwood and Sandown Roads.

The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large weatherboard building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 2 has a smaller weatherboard building. Myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting room on platform 1, and at the entrance to platform 2.

A third rail line was to have been built connecting the station with Dandenong and Caulfield railway stations as part of the $1 billion Dandenong railway line triplication project. This project was quietly abandoned, in favour of the Victorian Transport Plan. Work on the Springvale-Caulfield section was due to begin by 2011 and on the Springvale-Dandenong section between 2011 and 2016.[1]

History

Springvale station opened on 1 September 1880 as Spring Vale, and was renamed Springvale in 1972.[2] In 1975 the signal box was provided with a new relay interlocking system.[3] It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 7 June 1996.[4]

The remnant of a former branch line which went to Spring Vale Cemetery station was located at the down end of the station as siding 'B'. In October 2002 it was booked out of use, and the associated points, signals, crossover, and overhead wiring were removed in August 2008.[5]
