Sportsman Channel is a television speciality channel dedicated to hunting, shooting and fishing programming. It launched in 2003.
As of August 2013, approximately 31,822,000 American households (27.87% of households with television) receive the Sportsman Channel.[1]
History
Sportsman Channel was started in 2003 by C. Michael Cooley and Todd D. Hansen of Muskego, Wisconsin. In June 2007, the channel was purchased by the InterMedia Outdoors Holdings group, a division of private equity group InterMedia Partners.[2]
In August 2008, InterMedia Outdoors acquired Barrett Productions, one of the preeminent producers of outdoors, adventure and sports television programming, which extended the company's depth and breadth of programming assets targeted toward American sportsmen.[3]
In March 2009, Sportsman Channel brought on board InterMedia Outdoors Executive Vice President, Willy Burkhardt, as the new President for the network.[4] The appointment brings the company's full range of television content resources under the direction of one person, further integrating IMO and Sportsman Channel.
Programming
The channel has announced it will have up to 100 original shows starting in the fourth quarter of 2009.[5]
As of 2013, programming on Sportsman Channel includes various programming pertaining to hunting (both by archery and through firearms), fishing, and firearms. A one-hour condensed version of Cam & Co., a news magazine/talk radio program produced by the National Rifle Association for SiriusXM Patriot, airs each weekday evening. Most other shows air in half-hour time slots. Infomercials air only during the overnight graveyard slots.
Sportsman Channel HD
On January 19, 2010, the Channel announced it would launch a 1080i high definition feed in the first quarter of 2010.[6] In February 2010, Dish Network became the first provider to launch the channel in HD.[7] The HD feed is now available on various providers including Cablevision, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable.
Carriage
DirecTV added the channel on January 21, 2009.[8] Dish Network added it on February 10, 2010.[7] It is also available on Verizon FiOS, AT&T U-verse, Sky Angel, and many other cable systems.
