The Spirit of Queensland is a Queensland Rail long distance passenger rail service that will operate two times per week on the North Coast line between Brisbane and Cairns in over a distance of 1,681 kilometres. It will be operated by a Tilt Train operating in conjunction with The Sunlander.

History

In October 2010 the Queensland Government awarded a contract to Downer EDi for the construction of a new Tilt Train. The two existing diesel tilt trains used on the Cairns service will also be refurbished and extended from seven to ten carriages.[1][2] With the introduction of the Tilt Train the journey time will be reduced to 25 hours.[3] The maximum speed of the Tilt Train is 160km/h.

In October 2013 the first refurbished Tilt Train entered service on the existing Brisbane to Cairns service.[4] When the new set arrives in 2014 it will replace the locomotive hauled stock on The Sunlander.
