Southern University Bangladesh (Bengali: সার্দান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or (SUB) is a private university in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Southern was established as an Institute in 1998. Under the Private University Act.The Southern University founded by Sarwar Jahan and Ishrat Jahan and got approval from Ministry of Education in the year of 2003. Southern University is accredited by the University Grants Commission Bangladeshthe highest controlling authority for Government and Non-Government Universities in Bangladesh.

History

1998: The Institute of Management & Information Technology (IMIT) was established with joint enrollment program with American and UK universities to offer Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programs.

2000: IMIT became an affiliated institute of UK, USA.

2001: The institute sponsors (Sarwar Jahan and Ishrat Jahan) formed a non-profit organization called AJ Foundation under which Southern University was established. AJ Foundation has been registered under the Societies Regulation Act XXI of 1860, Issue 574, CHC 151, 2001

2002: Southern University Bangladesh absorbed IMIT under the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) Bangladesh (the highest accredited body for Bangladeshi universities). UGC and the Ministry of Education of the Government of Bangladesh approved Southern University as a legal private university in Chittagong, Bangladesh, under the Private University Act.1992 & 1998.

Southern University Bangladesh originated from the establishment of an institute in 1998 as an affiliated higher educational center of USA and UK universities. After successful operation for a number of years, the promoters of the institute Sarwar and Ishrat Jahan conceived the idea of establishing a private University at Chittagong to cater to the increasing higher education needs of the port city. On the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education the Government of Bangladesh accorded approval to this private University on January 14, 2003. The university is administered by Southern University Trust.
