South United Football Club is an India I-League 2nd Division football club based in Bangalore.

South United was founded on 16 August 2012 in Bangalore.[1] On 25 January 2013 it was announced that the club would compete in the 2013 I-League 2nd Division which is the second division of football in the country.[2]

History

South United Football Club was founded on 16 August 2012 at a gala in Bangalore by Lokko Sports India Pvt. Ltd. with the long term goal of providing a base for youngsters, not only in Bangalore but the entire Southern India region, to take up football as a professional career[3] with CEO of Lokko Sports, Lokknath Char, saying "We're looking to bridge the gap between elite and grassroots sports while encouraging youngsters to take up sports as employment."[3] It was also announced after their founding that Karnataka State Football Association President, AR Khaleel, said that the club would also have automatic recommendation from the state federation to join the I-League 2nd Division in 2013.[3]

The club also announced the appointment of their first ever coach on 19 August 2012 when they signed former Indian international and former National Football League top scorer, Raman Vijayan, as the head coach.[3] The previous season Vijayan led another Bangalore club, KGF Academy, to win the state league competition, the Bangalore Super Division and he led KGF Academy to a surprise fourth place finish in Group C during the 2012 I-League 2nd Division however it was not enough to progress to the next round.[3][4]

The club started their league history on 6 December 2012 in the 2012–13 Bangalore Super Division at the Bangalore Football Stadium against Army Service Corps where the club won 2–0 with former I-League player, Gunashekar Vignesh, scoring the first ever goal for the club in the 47th minute.[5] The club however failed to come out as the top team in the league season and had to settle for 2nd place after a last day loss to MEG Bangalore by a score of 2–1 at the Bangalore Football Stadium.[6]
