South Sound Center
South Sound Center is a shopping mall located in Lacey, Washington. Its major stores include Target, Sears, and Kohl's. Prior to a re-development in 2001, the center was a 500,000-square-foot (46,000 m2) enclosed mall.[1]
History
South Sound Center opened in 1966 and was billed as the fourth regional shopping center in the state of Washington.[1] Anchors at one time included Nordstrom Place Two (closed in 1994[2]), Peoples (1966–1983, which later opened as Mervyns in 1984), Sears, and Woolworth. After many stores in the mall moved out and the closing of the last Woolworth store in the state of Washington in 1997,[3] the enclosed mall portion was torn down in 2001 for a Target store between Sears and Mervyns. For some time in 1980- early 1990s, it hosted the "Christmas Island" display during the holiday season at the back of the parking lot. The South Sound Center hosted an annual July 3rd fireworks display for 45 years before being moved in 2012.[4]
