South Asian Gate
South Asian Gate (南亚之门) will be Kunming City's tallest skyscraper at 83-storeys, with a height of 333m. It will be situated in the Tuodong Lu Central Business District and will be the largest building in the Yunnan province.
The first design had 288 metres and 72 storeys. The Department of Construction did not approve it, because Yunnan is a seismically active region and the design would not be safe in a strong earthquake. It was revised to 316 metres, 81 storeys. Again it was turned down. It was approved the third time at 333 metres and 83 storeys. The approved design has two separate towers, equal in height. The space between the towers looks like a Yunnan-style pagoda.
It is scheduled to be completed 2012 or 2013 and will be home to a five-star hotel, serviced apartments, grade-A office space, residential apartments, a commercial area, and leisure and entertainment facilities. The South Asian Gate will occupy 34,500 square metres with a total construction area of 550,000 square metres.
The project is a joint venture between Jiangsu World Group (江苏天地集团) and Yunnan Zhongju Group (云南中炬集团). In addition to being a local landmark and the dominant feature in Kunming's skyline, the building is expected to serve as a hub for business between China and South and Southeast Asia.
As a milestone project in Kunming, South Asian Gate takes more attention of the Municipal Party Committee and Government, according to sources[citation needed]. On November 3, the developer of the South Asian Gate brought six conceptual blueprints from well-known foreign and domestic architectural agencies to a Kunming Urban Planning and Major Programs Briefing Meeting. On December 2, the project was announced by the Kunming Planning Bureau.
