Sound of Contact is a British-based progressive rock band consisting of members Simon Collins (vocals, drums) and Matt Dorsey (guitar, bass). Formed in 2009, the band released their debut album in May 2013.[1][2][3]

History

Co-founding members of the band, Simon Collins and Dave Kerzner, met in New York at rehearsals for the music group Genesis in 2006.[2] While Genesis was on tour during 2007, Collins and Kerzner, along with Kelly Nordstrom, recorded a cover of the 1981 Genesis song, "Keep It Dark," as a tribute to Collins' father, Phil Collins.[2][4][5] The younger Collins then developed his 2008 solo album, U-Catastrophe,[5] in association with Kerzner, who is credited as one of the album's songwriters.[6] Collins approached Kerzner in 2009 about forming a band.[7] The pair enlisted help from Nordstrom and Matt Dorsey, and work began on their first collaborative project in Miami, Florida.[2] In early January 2014, Kerzner announced his departure from the band and has expressed a desire to continue his work with his company Sonic Reality and pursue his own music projects.[8]

Musical Style

Sound of Contact's musical roots reflect the varied backgrounds of the band members. Kerzner's previous projects were with Steve Hackett, his own music software company, Sonic Reality, and with Alan Parsons, Keith Emerson, and Nick Mason.[9][10][11] Collins' early musical influences were from his father and the band Genesis.[1] Like Kerzner, Collins also worked with Steve Hackett. Kelly Nordstrom was involved in the live electronica music scene in the late 1990s, but has recently been influenced by pop, rock, and acoustic genres, performing with Sass Jordan and Toni Childs.[12] From 2007 to 2010, Dorsey was a member of the punk rock band Dead Mechanical, as well as a member of Collins' solo band.[13][14]

Album

Between 2010 and 2012, the group developed and recorded their first studio album, Dimensionaut, with assistance from sound engineers Nick Davis and Chris Holmes.[2] The band recorded in trios at Vancouver, British Columbia's Greenhouse Studios, then moved work on the album to England as well as Kerzner's Sonic Reality studios in Miami.[2] After the group publicly announced the band's identity as "Sound of Contact" in December 2012, an online video teaser for Dimensionaut was released.[7] Sound of Contact signed its first recording contract with Inside Out Music in March 2013.[15] Dimensionaut was released worldwide in late May 2013,[3] with "Not Coming Down" released as the band's first single.[16]

Concerts and touring

Tour dates and concerts were scheduled for the band after they signed a recording contract with Inside Out Music. In conjunction with Inside Out artists Marillion[17] and Spock's Beard,[18] Montreal was the location Sound of Contact's concert debut on March 24, 2013 as the opening act for Marillion.[17] This was followed by a short European tour in May 2013 beginning in Sheffield, England and ending in Hamburg, Germany. Other bands performing on the tour were Spock's Beard and Beardfish.[18] During the summer of 2013, the band performed at the "Night of the Prog" festival in Lorelei, Germany.[19]

Sound of Contact received the "Limelight" award at the second-annual Progressive Music Awards held on September 2, 2013.[20][21]
