Sonija Kwok (Chinese: 郭羨妮, born 22 July 1974) is a Hong Kong actress, currently working for TVB.
She was born in Hong Kong and is of mixed 3/4 Cantonese and 1/4 English parentage. Kwok immigrated to Vancouver, Canada from Hong Kong. She initially attended the University of British Columbia, but she transferred to Simon Fraser University and completed her BA with a major in Psychology. After graduating from university, she became a Cathay Pacific flight attendant.
Pageant career
After a short stint as a flight attendant, she returned to Hong Kong in 1999 and competed in the Miss Hong Kong 1999 pageant. Before the semi-finals, she was a favourite for the crown because of her looks. In the semi-finals, she took the Miss Photogenic award. After winning that award, she became a huge favorite for the crown; for the Miss Hong Kong pageant contests of 1996 to 2001, all winners of the pageant had also won the Miss Photogenic award. Ultimately, she won the title of Miss Hong Kong in July 1999. She also managed to grab two other awards: Miss International Goodwill and Miss Intelligence. Coincidentally, the winners of the Miss Hong Kong pageant 1997-2000 hailed from Vancouver, Canada.
After winning the Miss Hong Kong title, she participated in many TVB events. In February 2000, she represented Hong Kong at the Miss Chinese International 2000 pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada. She won and was crowned and had also won two other awards. She is considered one of the most successful Miss Hong Kong and Miss Chinese International winners, especially since she is the only Miss Hong Kong representative to win the Miss Chinese International pageant since Hong Kong's Michelle Reis took the crown in the pageant's inaugural year in 1988. After her success in both pageants, she represented Hong Kong at the Miss Universe 2000 pageant. Unfortunately, she did not managed to enter the top ten in that pageant which was held in Cyprus. However, she did make some impact, for instance, by making the top ten of the Miss Photogenic polls and being featured in the front image of the Miss Universe website. Kwok, as of now, is the last representative from Hong Kong to enter the Miss Universe beauty pageant.
Today, she is filming TV series for TVB and continues to star in many TV shows, series, commercials, and entertainment functions, as well as being a spokeswoman for many beauty and other commercial products in Hong Kong. She is also filming TV series in mainland China.
Assaulted by her maid
On 24 March 2009, Kwok was attacked by her maid, who bit her arm, pulled her hair and held a knife to her neck. This followed Kwok's reporting to the police of an earlier incident in which the maid, apparently distraught over the break-up of a relationship, held a knife to her own throat and was calmed by Kwok. The helper was subsequently held in a mental hospital.[1]
Personal
Kwok married Chinese martial arts choreographer Zhu Shaojie (朱少杰) in Guam in 2011. The pair met in a film shoot in China a year earlier.
She has been linked to other TVB stars in the past including Deric Wan and Steven Ma.
