Sonic Boom is an upcoming French CGI-animated television series currently being produced by OuiDo! Entertainment in collaboration with Sega of America, based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise created by Sega. Featuring new designs for the characters, the series will begin airing on Cartoon Network in North America and on Canal J and Gulli in France sometime in Fall 2014, followed by an international release.

Production

The animated series was first announced in October 2013, revealing a teaser image featuring the show's four main protagonists, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, in silhouette form. The series, which will consist of 52 eleven-minute episodes and is targeted at an audience of children aged 6-11, is being developed by Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Mier, and Sandrine Nguyen, and produced by Baily and Bill Freiberger, under the supervision of Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.[1] On February 6, 2014, Sega revealed the first trailer for the series,[2] showcasing the new designs for the characters and featuring returning voice actors from the video game series, including Roger Craig Smith as Sonic and Mike Pollock as Doctor Eggman.[3] In an interview with Polygon, Iizuka stated the series came about as a desire to appeal more to Western territories, following the 2003 Japanese anime series, Sonic X. As such, there are currently no plans to release the series or its games in Japan, with Iizuka also stating that the Japanese Sonic Team will continue to make traditional Sonic titles in parallel to Sonic Boom.[4]

Video game

A video game based on the series is currently in production by Sega for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems.[5] The Wii U version is being developed by BigRedButton Entertainment whilst the 3DS version is being developed by Sanzaru Games, with both studios collaborating with Sonic Team on the projects. The game was announced alongside the TV series' first trailer on February 6, 2014 and will serve as a prequel to the series. The game will see players alternate control between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, utilizing each of their abilities, including Sonic's speed, Tails' flight, Knuckles' strength, and Amy's agility. The game will feature up to two players cooperatively and four players competitively.[6]
