Solidarity (Ukrainian: Солідарність) is a political party in Ukraine registered in March 2001.[1] The party is a spin of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united).[2] The party has been always linked to Petro Poroshenko.[2][3]

History

The party started as a parliamentary faction in 2000 created by Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) faction member Petro Poroshenko.[2] Taras Kuzio claims with the help of then President Kuchma who allegedly wanted to limit the influence of Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united).[2] A lot of its new members where deputies elected in 1998 for the Peasant Party of Ukraine.[2] The part was led by Poroshenko.[4] Poroshenko was instrumental in creating the (later to become the biggest party of Ukraine[5]) Party of Regions in 2001; however, Solidarity did not merge with that party.[4]

At the 2002 parliamentary elections the party was part of the Viktor Yushchenko Bloc Our Ukraine.[6] In 2004 the party was no longer part of Our Ukraine but was represented by 23 deputies in the Ukrainian Parliament (the forming of new factions whose parties were not elected in parliament was not unique in Ukraine at the time).[7]

Since 2002 the party has not participated in any elections.[1][8] On 17 June 2013 Batkivshchyna member of parliament Yuriy Stets became head of the party.[3] Stets is a member of the united opposition’s political council.[3]
