History

It was founded in 1957, and was known as Chelyabinsk-70 until 1991.[citation needed] During the Soviet era, it was a closed city, too secret to be shown on maps. Town status was granted to it in 1993.[citation needed]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with two rural localities, incorporated as the Town of Snezhinsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] As a municipal division, the Town of Snezhinsk is incorporated as Snezhinsky Urban Okrug.[1]
