SmartOS is an open-source Unix-like operating system that combines OpenSolaris technology with Linux KVM virtualization.[1] Its core kernel contributed to illumos project. It features four technologies, ZFS, DTrace, Zones and KVM.[2][3] SmartOS is designed to be particularly suitable for building clouds and generating appliances.[4] It is developed for Joyent.
A partnership between Joyent and MongoDB Inc. (formerly 10gen), announced product/technology enhancements to increase performance, flexibility and scalability.[5]
