"Slit Skirts" is a song written and composed by Pete Townshend, the guitarist for English rock band The Who. The song is on Townshend's solo album All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.
Review
Like most of the material from the 1982 album, "Slit Skirts" is a contemplative piece, this time draped with the personal, self-analysis of an aging man, and an aging rock star.[1]
"Slit Skirts" stands out from most music of that year as a song wallowing in the realization of middle age while acknowledging the fact that youth will always be a thing of the past and that earned it quite a lot of radio play.[2]
The song implies that Pete Townshend has reached the point of day-to-day reflection; the adventures of the bar scene and the allure of romance are now out of reach.
The song is said to have the same feel as The Who's "You Better You Bet" or Townshend's "Pure and Easy" from his debut album. Pete Townshend has always been a master songwriter, and while "Slit Skirts" isn't a masterpiece by any means, it's a fine example of how he can articulate the hardships of age and the pain of looking back.
