Skavlan is a Norwegian-Swedish television talk show hosted by Norwegian journalist Fredrik Skavlan. It premiered in Sweden on Sveriges Television (SVT) in January 2009,[2] and the first guests to appear on the show were former Prime Minister of Sweden Göran Persson and his wife Anitra Steen.[3] On 8 May 2009, it was announced that Skavlan had been renewed for a second season. It was also announced that the show would no longer only be produced by SVT in Sweden; Skavlan would now be partly produced in Norway by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). The first twelve episodes of Skavlan's second season were produced by SVT in Sweden, and the remaining twelve by NRK in Norway.[4]
History
Skavlan speaks Norwegian and his dialog is therefore subtitled in Swedish in Sweden, even though the two languages are quite similar and mutually intelligible. If the persons being interviewed by Skavlan are Swedish, he often tells them to let him know if they do not understand what he is saying.[3] Swedish novelist Jan Guillou has criticized SVT for subtitling the program, stating "there is no need for that. If the host had been Danish, subtitling would have been necessary, but with a Norwegian host it does not make any sense."[5]
Many international celebrities have visited Skavlan, including Jay-Z, Robbie Williams, Vince Vaughn, Shakira, Rihanna, and Cheryl Cole.[6] The first season of the show was a ratings success, with a Swedish viewership as high as 1,690,000 for one episode.[4][7] The second season surpassed the first season as far as ratings were concerned. At the most, the show was seen by 2,925,000 people (Norway and Sweden combined), making the show bigger than The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien in the United States.[8] On 22 January 2010, the program set a new Norwegian ratings record when 1,248,000 people tuned in.[9]
In 2009, Skavlan was awarded with the Swedish television award Kristallen in the "Best Television Host" category for his work on the show. Skavlan won in the "Best Entertainment Program" category the same year.[10] Swedish television critic Jon-Olov Andersson of Aftonbladet praised Skavlan for the way he is able to get his guests to open up and for the way he follows up to their responses.[3] In 2010 he won the Gullruten Award for "Best Male Norwegian Television Host".[11]
On 6 April 2010 it was revealed that Skavlan would be renewed for two seasons, starting in the autumn of 2010 and running until the end of 2011.[12] On 27 April it was also revealed that Fredrik Skavlan would start to produce his show himself, via his newly established company Monkberry, thereby selling the rights to every individual episode to SVT and NRK.[13]
In May 2011 it was revealed that Skavlan was the first Scandinavian talk show ever to be sold to an English language broadcaster, when it was shown on BBC Entertainment,[14] although it fared poorly and was dropped.[15] From season 5 onwards, a number of episodes were recorded at the BBC studios in London. A number of short adverts showcasing this were made, starring Fredrik Skavlan having tea with Robbie Williams at a high end restaurant.[16]
In 2011 Skavlan entered into a partnership with Norwegian photographer Bjørn Opsahl which ends in autumn 2014 with a book and exhibitions in Oslo and Stockholm. Opsahl is portraying Skavlan's guests backstage, and has so far worked with international celebrities such as Lionel Richie, Sir Ben Kingsley, Noel Gallagher, Petter Stordalen, Dave Grohl, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber.[17][18]
In September 2013, it was announced that Skavlan would be shown on Denmark's DR2, but would not feature guests speaking Danish.[19]

Criticism
The show has received criticism from leading intellectuals and some of their female guest, accusing Fredrik Skavlan of being sexist and asking impertinent questions and flirting with his female guests. Carolina Gynning said to Swedish media that she found his questions "demeaning".[21] Fredrik Skavlan retaliated in an interview with Swedish newspaper Expressen in which he said that the accusations were "absurd" and that he considered himself to be a "feminist".[22]
Skavlan encountered some criticism from Norwegian viewers for his tough interview with former Icelandic prime minister Geir Haarde.[23]
