Skatoony (stylized as SKAToonY) is a British/Canadian children's live-action game show, pitting live-action kids against cartoons. The series is co-produced with Talent Television (for the British version), Blink Studios (for the Arabic Version),[1][2] and Marblemedia with Smiley Guy Studios (for the North American version). The series is used to air on Cartoon Network in the UK, and on Teletoon in Canada. It is hosted by 'Chudd Chudders' (voiced by Rupert Degas in the UK and Jonathan Wilson in NA) and 'The Earl' (voiced by Lewis MacLeod in UK and James Rankin in NA).

History

In 2001, Skatoony began as a competition microsite on the Cartoon Network UK website. In 2006, then appeared the first full length Skatoony TV show. However, a few phone-in shows such as Skatoony Quizmas, Ready Steady Skatoony and Skatoony Truckatoony existed before as a sort of continuity during school holidays. These phone-in shows ended in 2005.

On February 9, 2009, Marblemedia announced they would be producing a North American version of the series Skatoony (in French and English) for].[3] The Canadian adaptation, titled Skatoony North America to differentiate it from other adaptations follows the same format. The English version of Skatoony is filmed in Toronto, while the French version is filmed in Montreal with a different set of contestants; however, the outcome of the animated contestants remains the same between both versions. Jonathan Wilson voices Chudd Chudders while James Rankin provides the voice of The Earl, and new addition to the North American release, Charles La Puck, which is voiced by Jeff Lumby. A Middle Eastern adaptation of Skatoony debuted on April 5, 2011 on Cartoon Network Arabic.[4][5]

In addition to the British format, one contestant in each episode of Skatoony North America will be a guest contestant from a show from a Canadian animated series. Accordingly, a significant figure from the series will also be seen in the Skatoony opening sequence. Other children's series (including but not limited to shows on the Teletoon lineup) are often the subject of the questions asked on the shows. Guest contestants are taken from the following series:

Total Drama 1–2 Contestants for Season 1 are characters exclusively from Total Drama Island, and the contestants for Season 2 are characters exclusively from Total Drama: Revenge of the Island. Chris McLean appears in the opening sequence, and Sierra appears in the Skatoony audience in each episode, even when there is no guest.
Jimmy Two-Shoes 3[6] Jimmy Two-Shoes does not air on Cartoon Network in the US, though it does air on Cartoon Network in other regions. This does however air on Disney XD. Heloise is seen in this trailer, and was a contestant in the episode "Follow that Quizblock".

As Total Drama itself is an animated reality series, it's to be noted that the contestant standings on Total Drama has no standing on which Total Drama series character will appear in each new episode. All guest contestants are voiced by the voice actors from their respective series.

Guest contestant replacement

In Skatoony, the quizblock has 6 colored squares - green, red, pink, purple, blue and yellow. The children get the green, pink and blue squares (occasionally they get purple and red squares), and the cartoon contestants get the red, yellow and purple. The guest contestants take the place of a cartoon character from the UK version. In the episode 'Skeleton Crew in Da House' in NA, Scabz was originally a contestant but he left before the 1st round and was replaced by Harold.

Format

The show's format is that three child contestants and three cartoon character contestants, making 6 contestants in all, compete in a quiz show lasting three rounds. After the first two rounds, the two lowest scoring contestants are eliminated. The first round is always Bang On! or Bogus?, a rapid-fire true-or-false questioning round; with "Bang On!" meaning true, and "Bogus!" meaning false. The last two rounds vary between episodes. As contestants are eliminated, they are usually catapulted out of their seats as the hosts (and the remaining sing "You're Outta Here!"). And the losing contestants are catapulted into a factory containing a nasty thing like 'Compost World' or 'Leftover School Dinners Dump' or 'Used Nappy Dump' or 'Concrete Pillow Factory', and then they are (sometimes) not seen for the remainder of the episode. Vignettes featuring eliminated animated contestants (and on occasion, eliminated child contestants) interacting with Chudd or the Earl (as well, on Skatoony North America, Charles La Puck, their boss [Tony Eagle-Eyes in the UK]) also appear during the progression of the show; in Skatoony North America, this extends to the web extras available on the Skatoony website. The first round always ends with having one live-kid and a cartoon contestant being eliminated.

At the end of three rounds, the remaining contestant takes on the Skatoony Quiz Champ Challenge, where they must answer ten questions correctly in 90 seconds. After 45 seconds, the clock will temporarily stop, and Earl's Halfway Deal will be offered, trading in time for correct answers (10 seconds per point to raise the contestant to a maximum of 7 points or 25 seconds for three points if fewer than five questions have been answered correctly at that point; the clock will stop briefly without a deal offered if the player already has at least 8 points. A contestant will be offered 1 point for 10 seconds if the player has exactly 7 points). If the contestant finishes with time remaining and get ten questions right, the contestant wins a prize, offered at the start of each episode. If a contestant finishes with the ten correct answers in under 45 seconds, they are further honoured with being called "#1 Skatoony Quiz Champ Champion".

Note that the games used in each round and the contestants' interactions are based on the number of child contestants remaining, and that the game always ensures that a child contestant will always be the last remaining contestant. Sometimes, for the third round, it can be either 1 child vs 1 toon, or 2 children vs each other. In addition, it is typical for the second-round challenge to be rigged against an animated contestant, leading to their elimination as well.

In Skatoony North America, the prize for winning the Skatoony Quiz Champ Challenge in the first season is an iPod touch; later seasons have refused to disclose the grand prize. Other merchandise from Teletoon shows are also awarded to the contestants for their participation.

In the British version, the Prizes were like this:

  • Season 1: A Sony PSP (on two episodes it was a video iPod). In one episode it was turned into a frog.
  • Season 2: A Nintendo Wii
  • Season 3: An iPod Touch (on two episodes it was a Nintendo DS)

Rounds

Beyond Bang On! or Bogus? (used in the first round) and the Skatoony Quiz Champ Challenge (when one contestant remains), the following challenges have been used:

Round 2 challenges

  • Same Sound Name Round (Season 1 [NA and UK]) - Each contestant is given three placards, each depicting a picture corresponding to a particular word, with all three words rhyme with each other. Chudd's questions this round will have an answer that will either match or have the same pronunciation as one of these three placards. Contestants are only awarded points for presenting the correct placard: giving the correct answer verbally while presenting the wrong placard does not award points.
  • Wearin' the World? (Season 1 [NA and UK]) - Each contestant is given three hats, representing three countries. All of Chudd's questions this round have answers corresponding to one of these three countries, and contestants must wear the correct hat in order to be awarded points. Giving the correct answer verbally while wearing the wrong hat (or not wearing the hat at all) does not award points.
  • Draw What You Hear, and Shout Out When You Know What You've Drawn! (all Seasons [UK and NA]) - Chudd will use words to describe what it is to be drawn, and contestants must infer what is being drawn from Chudd's instructions. Chudd will continue with the description until one contestant answers correctly.
  • Alphabet Soup (Season 2 [UK and NA]) - Each contestant is given four of alphabet symbols embedded in a liquid. Chudd's questions with have answers that begin with or rhyme with one of the letters of the alphabet. Contestants are only awarded points for presenting the correct letter of the alphabet; giving the correct answer verbally whilst holding the wrong letter does not award points. It was only played once in Season 2, in the first episode "Body Swap".
  • Colourful Language (Seasons 2 and 3 [UK and NA]) - Each contestant has 4 boxes in front of them, each with a different colour. Chudd's Questions will be about the colours written on the box. They have to give the colour written on the box, not the one coloured. It was only played once in the UK version of Season 3, in the fifth episode "Pop Video".
  • Throw If You Know (Season 2 [UK and NA], and Season 3 [UK]) - Each Contestant wears a big round hat with 3 balls, each with a different type, Chudd's questions will be about them. If they get it right, they have to throw the correct ball to Chudd. In the UK Season 3 episode "Rollercoaster", the balls were replaced with moons, stars and red balls (planets).
  • Blindfold Buffet (Season 2 [UK and NA]) - In front of the contestants are 5 different foods/animals, which are answers to the questions that are answered. They have to pick up a handful of the right answer, then buzz in. However, all the contestants are blindfolded, so that they can't see the food in front of them. Contestants are only awarded points for presenting the correct food; giving the correct answer verbally whilst holding the wrong food does not award points. This round is never played in the Skatoony studio, and it was played in space and in the ocean.
  • Cheery Tunes (Season 2 [UK and NA]) - You have to guess the tune of a nursery rhyme Earl plays. It was only played in the episode "Pre-School Proble"'.
  • Goldie Pops' Deeply Dipping Game (Season 2 [UK and NA]) - Goldie Pops' personal game, which was only played in the episode "Stop The Pop". Similar to Same Sound Name Round, except the 3 rhyming answers are in tanks of yucky sludge, and the contestants must pick the answers up with their teeth, like apple bobbing. It was called Goldie Pops' Same Sound Name Round in NA.
  • Colour Me Quizzy ((Seasons 2 and 3 [UK and NA]) - The contestants have 3 boxes of coloured paint in front of them. They have to dip their face in the correct colour, then hit their buzzer. Contestants are only awarded points for the correct colour that's on their face; giving the correct answer verbally whilst the wrong colour paint is on their face does not award points. The children contestants wear goggles to protect their eyes. In the Season 3 episode "Cafe Le Quiz", they substituted the paint for mustard (yellow), brown sauce (brown), and mushy peas (green).
  • Quick Pic Picking! (Season 2 [NA and UK]) - You have to guess the animal pic Chudd is describing. It was only played once in the UK version of Season 2, in the tenth episode "I Spy, You Quiz".
  • Animal Swap-a-Butt (Season 2 [NA], and Season 3 [NA and [UK])
  • Talkin' Backwords! (Season 3 [NA & UK]) - Chudd Chudders goes around the quizblock and asks each of the contestants a question in turn; BUT they have to give their answer back to front. Seen and played in the episodes "Happy Hair-Rasing Birthday" and "Runaway Quizblock".
  • Blinking Brain Box (Season 3 [NA & UK])

Round 3 challenges

  • Hoo Flung Dung! (all Seasons [UK and NA]) - In this round, Hoo, the "artistic gorilla", will throw his "paint" (though claimed to be dung by the round's title, on other occasions it is implied to be ordinary mud) onto a canvas. The "paint" will form into a particular shape, which the contestants must identify. A particular feature of this challenge is the fact that some of the "paint" is splattered on the contestants.
  • DangerBox (Season 1 [NA and UK]) - Presented in front of each contestants are three boxes, each of which contains a particular type of food, be it something nice [like candyfloss] or nasty (like insects). Contestants must open a box and eat its contents BEFORE giving the answer to each question Chudd asks. Contestants may not pick a box more than once. Refusing to eat what's in a box will deny the contestant both the question and the points with it.
  • Fast Food (Seasons 1 and 2 [UK and NA])- The contestants compete head to head in a speed quizzing challenge. Each contestant will have as much time as it takes for the other to consume a specified quantity of food.
  • Egg Noggin! (all Seasons [UK and NA]) - Presented in front of each contestant is a row of eggs, some of which are raw and some of which are hard-boiled. The two contestants must listen to the general knowledge questions, and then buzz in when they know the answer. Contestants are awarded one point for each correct answer. Regardless of whether the contestant answers correctly or not, contestants must then select an egg and break it against their forehead. A bonus point is awarded if the egg chosen is hard-boiled, but if it is raw, the egg yolk will go all over their face! Enough eggs are provided so that neither contestant runs out of eggs.
  • The DangerGrid of Doom (Seasons 2 and 3 [UK and NA]) - The DangerGrid of Doom is a huge robot with a panel of 12 numbers, each containing a nasty surprise such as drenching the contestant in various yucky goo or a deduction of points. Contestants answering correctly may choose one panel from the grid as a nasty surprise to unleash on their opponent. Conversely, contestants answering incorrectly are subject to a nasty surprise chosen by their opponent from the grid. In the UK Season 3 episode "Robot Rampage", the Dangergrid of Doom was the new host/main antagonist of the episode, but his round was never played.
  • Viking Flung Dung! (Season 2 [UK and NA]) - Same rules as Hoo Flung Dung, but only played in the Season 2's sixth episode "Vikings".
  • Stinky Drinky (Seasons 2 and 3 [UK and NA])- Contestants have to answer general knowledge questions. If you get it right, your opponent has to drink one of the yucky drinks lined up in front of them. But get the question wrong, and you have to drink one! In the UK Season 2 episode "In the Belly of The Boss", a girl named Lozzie got the highest score in this game; 7 points, mostly due to her opponent, Wilf, refusing to drink any of his drinks. Just like Blindfold Buffet, this round is never played in the studio; it was played in a spooky cave, inside their boss' stomach, and out in the desert in the middle of nowhere.
  • Mincepie Roulette (Seasons 2 and 3 [UK and NA]): Contestants have to answer general knowledge questions. If you get it right, your opponent has to eat one of the mince pies lined up in front of them. Sounds good, right? Except there isn't mince in there at all, It's something horrid! But get the question wrong, and you have to eat a pie.

In the end, after Bigfoot loses the third round whilst sacrificing his smart makeover to save the kid that moves on to the final round from being splattered by poo, the two affected contestants become a couple.

December 2, 2010 (English Teletoon) 		Harold (Brian Froud) Quit 2nd Round (supposed to be eliminated in the 3rd Round) T-Bone, the lead singer of a band called the Skeleton Crew, refuses to admit defeat when he loses the first round and demands to take over another band member's spot when he is eliminated after each round, but when he loses the last round, he retaliates by throwing eggs at the winner, but Chudd and Earl smash him up with a mongo-sized egg. Also, Charles's granny is also there, and Chudd and Earl have to stop her seeing the Skeleton Crew (and guest star Harold).
Note 1: Harold is the second contestant in this episode to quit Skatoony, with former contestant Scabz being the first.
Note 2: Harold is also the first (and only) "guest" contestant to quit Skatoony.

Note: Katie and Sadie are the only TDI contestants to be a pair, and also the only guest contestants to be eliminated 1st round in Season 1.

But after he gets eliminated in the first round, he throws a tantrum and, accidentally sends the whole quizblock down into a big cave, which is home to a giant bat! It's up to Chudd and Earl to save the contestants!
Note: CJ took the place of Hunty, a contestant with a brussel sprout head in Round 2 and had assisted help from his uncle to make it to Round 3, until his final elimination.

January 13, 2011 (English Teletoon) 		Bridgette (Kristin Fairlie) Eliminated 2nd Round The show is on location at Charles' animal zoo, where guest star Bridgette is protesting Charles' nasty animal treatment, whilst disguised as a bear. Chudd and Earl decide to help Bridgette's endeavour by "eliminating" the animal contestants (Bridgette included) and ejecting them to freedom after each round. And after the last round, they release the last lot of animals, completely emptying the zoo.
Note 1: This is the first episode to have a contestant replaced in the 2nd round, this being Violet, a gazelle contestant who was intentionally ejected by Chudd in Round 1, before she was supposed to be, and was replaced by Dale, a joey contestant.
Note 2: Rory, a lion contestant was the first contestant to just sit in the first round without answering a single question, possibly being already aware of the fact that the 2 lowest scorers at the end of the first two rounds would face elimination, earning him his freedom.

January 20, 2011 (English Teletoon) 		Courtney (Emilie-Claire Barlow) Eliminated 2nd Round Hoo falls in love and runs off with Monty, a contestant with a hairy face (mistaking him for a lady) after he is eliminated in the first round. Chudd, Earl and the contestants (including guest star Courtney) chase him to the jungle, but get attacked by a scorpion, which to Chudd is a giant. But Hoo shows up and stomps the scorpion. But Monty's hair explodes right off his face after too much stress, and leaves, much to Hoo's dismay.

Note 1: Headly Diddly Dee is the third contestant to quit the show, because just like Scabz in "Skeleton Crew in Da House", he left before the first round started.
Note 2: Guest star Leshawna was originally in the yellow square, but after Headly left, she moved into the red square.
Note 3: Gore, a robot contestant may have been the idea for the Danger Grid of Doom in Season 2.

Also, a series of 'upgrades' to the Skatoony set commissioned by Charles goes awry, leading to the quizblock flying off into the air via a rocket booster. But Guts Glory and his hired sidekick (and guest star) Chef Hatchet save the day.
Note: Chef Hatchet is the first "non-camper" Total Drama Island character to be in the show, since Chris McLean was a contestant in the Season 3 episode "Pop Video".

Meanwhile, Atilla the Hun, one of the contestants, threatens to destroy the set if he doesn't win the third round. But when he loses, he destroys it anyway, but Chudd and Earl use their new-found Bollywood music to stop him.

However, in the end he is caught (because Earl in Chudd's body asked the kid if it was really Fernando in his or her body), and forced to restore everyone back to normal.
Note 1: Roland Landlubber became the first contestant to compete in two different episodes.
Note 2: Dakota was the first Total Drama Revenge of the Island character to be unfairly kicked out 1st round, because of Fernando Fernando Fernando swapping bodies with her.

After getting eliminated in the first round, Zammo, a rat, and his buddies decide to recycle the trash - but they overdo it and soon start to recycle the Skatoony studio and the show transforms into Tooskany, with everybody except Chudd and the contestants getting their body parts mixed and matched!
Note 1: First and only time the normal Quiz Champ Challenge and Earl's Halfway Deal aren't played.

As a result, a Viking longboat appears and the Vikings on it kidnap the contestants! It's up to Chudd and Earl to disguise themselves as Vikings and save the contestants! In the end, Hoo shows up, angry at the Vikings for taking his place in Hoo Flung Dung!, and saves the contestants by tossing the Vikings away.

"Stop the Pop"[13] June 3, 2012 Silent B Unfairly eliminated 1st Round (because he's silent) A fancy pop star called Goldie Pops (Pun on Goldilocks) appears at Skatoony, and she takes over Chudd's job as the quiz host, and then the whole show, including her personal game Goldie Pops' Deeply Dipping Game (Goldie Pops' Same Sound Name Round in NA)! But very soon, Earl becomes suspicious when he hears a familiar voice come out of 'her' mouth, and figures out that it's really Chudd's rival, Headly Diddly Dee (from "Quiziatori Gladihost") in disguise.
Note 1: This is the 2nd episode that three female kids were featured in Season 2.
Note 2: Velma (from Scooby Doo)'s quote "Jinkies!" is heard in the UK version of this episode.

and Sadie (Lauren Lipson) 		Eliminated 2nd Round Today is the birthday of Charles' nephew CJ (from Season 1's "To the Quiz Cave") and he is a contestant on today's show. Charles threatens to fire Chudd unless he gets his nephew a present, but Chudd and Earl give him a 'pony', which is really Xcqankly wearing a saddle. After the break, a commercial for a new substance called 'Super Uber Grow' plays, and CJ uses too much of it, and during the third round, his hair grows into a monster, and attacks. In the end, Earl and Xcqankly save the day by eating the hair monster, and CJ's hair, making him bald.
Note 1: Katie and Sadie appear as contestants again in this episode, although they did not compete on Total Drama Revenge of the Island, they did have a minor cameo.

"Broke Charles" (a.k.a. "Broke Tony" in UK) March 17, 2013 Leshawna (Novie Edwards) Eliminated 1st Round The whole studio goes bust because Charles goes broke when he spends all his money on an expensive meal he had at a cafe. The studio closes down and Chudd, Earl, Charles (and the contestants) are all thrown onto the street. Chudd and Earl fill up a busking hat (which nearly gets them killed by an angry mob), take a ride on a bus (but get kicked out when they get on the bad side of Doug's fleas, when it was really a hobo Charles La Puck complaining he had fleas), then they end up in a canyon filled with a family of hillbillies, who give Chudd and Earl their supply of diamonds for performing the quiz for them, restoring Charles' wealth and re-opens the studio.
Note 1: Leshawna appears as a contestant again in this show, despite not being on Total Drama Revenge of the Island. However, she was on that series as a cameo.
Note 2: Both Atilla and LeShawna become two of thirteenth contestants to have two appearances on Skatoony, in North America.

"In Your Dreams" March 24, 2013 Beezy (Brian Froud) Eliminated 3rd Round After being put to sleep by Chudd and Earl's vacation slide show, Chudd, Earl and all the contestants are transported into a looney dream world, which almost leads to all of them being eaten by a giant baby!
Note 1: Sven Streudel became the fourteenth contestant to have two appearances on Skatoony.
Note 2: Roland Landlubber becomes the second contestant to have "three" separate appearances on Skatoony.
Note 3: Beezy is the third Jimmy Two-Shoes character to be on Skatoony and is also now the third guest contestant to make it to the third round.

"Café Le Quiz" April 7, 2013 Chef Hatchet (Clé Bennett) Eliminated 2nd Round After a bunny chews a cable underneath the quizblock, it inadvertently ejects all of the original contestants. Which means that Chudd and Earl must go to Café Le Quiz to find 6 new contestants, and also take over as the new chefs of Café Le Quiz, and things go bad when Chudd and the quizblock end up on their way into a food incinerator!
Note 1: All 3 toon characters - Zeppo, Zammo and Chef Hatchet were contestants for the second time in this episode, thus making them three of now nineteen contestants to accomplish this.
Note 2: Chef Hatchet was the third (and first guest) contestant to sit out the 2nd round, then face elimination.

"Host of Doom" (a.k.a. "Robot Rampage" in UK) April 14, 2013 Lucius Heinous VII (Sean Cullen) Eliminated 1st Round The Dangergrid of Doom takes over Chudd's job as quiz show host, because Charles plans to take Skatoony into the 21st Century, by upgrading security, and painting the set black and white, but becomes the main antagonist when he plans to turn everyone into robots! Can Chudd save the day?

"Stoopid Santa" December 25, 2012 Zoey (Barbara Mamabolo) Eliminated 2nd Round Charles blows all of the money that the studio uses for prizes on an expensive summer vacation, so Chudd, Earl and the contestants (including guest star Zoey), must convince Santa Clause (who is a contestant) that it is Christmas, so they can get a present to use as a prize for the winner. Will he believe them or will they end up on the naughty list?
