Singra (Bengali: সিংড়া) is an Upazila of Natore District in the Division of Rajshahi, Bangladesh.

Geography

Singra is located at 24°30′N 89°08′E / 24.500°N 89.133°E / 24.500; 89.133 . It has 52851 units of house hold and total area 528.46 km².

History

The area was governed by the Zamindars of Bengal and Natore, under the Rajshahi Raj family and the Dighapatia Raj families from 1700s to the mid-1800s, and then under the Singranatore family from late 1800s till 1951 when the Zamindari system was abolished by Pakistan.

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Singra has a population of 289952. Males constitute 51.29% of the population, and females 48.71%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 139625. Singra has an average literacy rate of 25.2% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Administrative

Singra has 12 Unions/Wards, 448 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 439 villages. Singra with an area of 528.46 km2, is bounded by NANDIGRAM upazila on the north, GURUDASPUR upazila on the south, TARASH and SHERPUR (Bogra) upazilas on the east, NATORE SADAR, ATRAI and RANINAGAR upazilas on the west.

Singra: (Town) consists of 9 wards and 26 mahallas. The area of the town is 11.70 km2. The town has a population of 22517; male 50.54%, female 49.46%. Literacy rate among the town people is 25.8%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Administration: Singra thana was established in 1869 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 1paurashava,12 union parishads, 446 mouzas and 439 villages.

Population: About four lacs; male 51.29%, female 48.71%; Muslim 87.59%, Hindu 11.46% and others 0.95%; ethnic national: Santal.

Religious institutions: Mosque 417, temple 75, church 2, tomb 4. Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 18.93%; male 26.9% and female 12%.

Educational institutions: 1 government college (Gole Afroz College),1government girls high school,total college 10, government primary school 110, non-government primary school 80, madrasa 65. Cultural organizations: Club 12, public library 1, cinema hall 4, theatre stage 1, women's organisation 1. Main occupations: Agriculture 52.12%, agricultural labourer 26.75%, wage labourer 1.79%, commerce 6.92%, service 2.32%, fishing 2.51% and others 7.59%. Land use: Total cultivable land 40580 hectares; fallow land 1054 hectares, single crop 65.9%, double crop 29.7% and treble crop 4.4%. Land control: Among the peasants, 25% are landless, 22.5% small, 37.5% intermediate and 15% rich. Value of land : The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 5000 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops: Paddy, wheat, mustard, onion, garlic. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Tobacco, sesame and jute. Main fruits: Mango, jackfruit, guava. Fisheries, dairies, poultries: Fishery 2, dairy 1 and poultry 4. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 27 km, semi pucca 9 km and mud road 523; waterways 39 nautical mile. Traditional transport : Palanquin, horse carriage. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct. Rivers : Gur, Atrai, Baranai, Gumani, Nandakuja and Nagar. Manufactories: Ice factory 15, biscuit factory 3, rice mill about 100. Cottage industries: Cottage industries include chatai making, goldsmith, potteries, copper and brass utensils. Hats, bazars and fairs: Hats and bazars are 39, fair 16, most noted of which are Singra, Kaliganj, Bildahar, Jamtali. Main exports: Rice, paddy, fish, date molasses, brass and copper utensils, chatai. NGO activities: Operationally important NGOs are BRAC, ASA, GRAMEEN BANK, PROSHIKA. Health centres: Hospital 1, health centre 12.
