Silver Side Up is the third studio album by Canadian rock band Nickelback, released on September 11, 2001. According to Allmusic, Silver Side Up continued Nickelback's tradition of "dark high-octane rock" from the band's first two albums.[1] It reached #1 in Canada,[4] Austria,[5] Ireland,[6] New Zealand[7] and the United Kingdom.[8] The album was certified 8× Platinum in Canada,[9] 6× Platinum in the US[10] and 3× Platinum in the UK.[11]

Singles

The singles released from Silver Side Up were "How You Remind Me," "Too Bad," and "Never Again" – the most successful being "How You Remind Me", which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts.[12]

Reception

Silver Side Up had sold 5,666,000 copies in the U.S. as of December 22, 2010.[13] According to IFPI, over 2,000,000 copies of the album were sold in Europe, with over 8,000,000 copies sold worldwide by 2002.

It was ranked #47 on Billboard's 200 Albums of the Decade.[14] Silver Side Up has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Background

By 2000, Nickelback had begun to receive commercial success through the performance of their sophomore album The State and its lead single Leader of Men. In early 2001 The State was certified Gold in Canada and had almost reached the same certification in America. At this time Nickelback was already planning to enter the studio to begin recording for their third studio album. In March 2001 Nickelback won their first Juno Award for Best New Group of the Year. In April of 2001 Nickelback returned to the studio they had used to record The State to begin recording for Silver Side Up. Many of the songs from Silver Side Up were written before The State was released; and some of them, like "Hangnail" and "Hollywood," had been played live and many fans already knew them before Silver Side Up was released. Nickelback took their time recording Silver Side Up, and eventually hired Rick Parashar to help them produce the album. By June of 2001 the band had completed their recordings for Silver Side Up and they announced the lead single from the album would be How You Remind Me. Mike Kroeger, the bass player, wanted to go with Never Again but the record label and bandmates decided that "How You Remind Me" would be more appropriate. In July of 2001 Nickelback sent "How You Remind Me" to radio stations. In August of 2001 Nickelback played their first German tour. In early September of 2001 Nickelback set out to tour with their friends in 3 Doors Down. While on tour, "How You Remind Me" reached #1 on both the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and the Modern Rock Tracks chart before Silver Side Up was officially released. Silver Side Up's lead single's success catapulted The State back onto the Billboard charts.

Release and chart performance

Silver Side Up was released on September 11, 2001. The album entered the Billboard 200 peaking at number 2 surpassing their previous album, The State, which peaked at 130. The album peaked at number 2 behind American rapper Jay-Z. Silver Side Up peaked at number 2 in the Billboard 200 and number 1 in the Canadian albums chart, becoming Nickelback's first album to enter the Canadian albums chart. The band decided to tour with Default and others on fall of 2001. Also, Silver Side Up received Platinum status by the RIAA, becoming Nickelback's first album to get Platinum status. In Canada it also reached Platinum status surpassing The State which went Gold Status in January 2001. By this time in the fall of 2001 "How You Remind Me" already became a massive hit. The song got a video which the video got played a lot of times in MTV and other channels. In December 2001 "How You Remind Me" peaked number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100. Eventually it stayed at number 1 for four weeks straight and the song stay in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 for 20 weeks straight. By the end of 2001 Silver Side Up had been awarded double platinum by the RIAA. Silver Side Up got followed singles which were "Too Bad" and "Never Again". Both of the songs were number 1 hit. Even though both of this songs were number 1 hit they could not achieved similar success to "How You Remind Me". In 2002 Nickelback toured worldwide to support Silver Side Up they even shot a concert on their home which the band released a DVD for it called Live At Home. The band won many Juno Awards and they even won a lot of Billboard Music Awards. The band also played at the Billboard Music Awards and their song "How You Remind Me" became the number 1 song of the Hot 100 of the year for 2002 surpassing many artists that had massive singles in that time. By early of 2003 the band got nominated for the American Music Awards. Silver Side Up is certified 6x Multi Platinum by the RIAA and 8x Multi Platinum by the CRIAA. The album has sold millions of copies all around the world and it proved to be one of the most successful albums of the 2000s.

History

In January 2001, after the success of their previous album, The State, Nickelback announced their follow-up to the record. In April 2001, the band came back to the same studio that they used to record The State to record Silver Side Up with producer Rick Parashar. In June 2001 the band announce that the new single from the album will be called "How You Remind Me". The band also announce that their producer will be Rick Parashar. In August, the single "How You Remind Me" reached the top ten of both the Billboard Mainstream and Alternative rock tracks chart, and they went on tour in Germany. After the German tour, they traveled back to North America to tour with 3 Doors Down in August and September 2001. The week of 15 September 2001 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, "How You Remind Me" went to number 1. One week later it peaked at number 1 in the Alternative Rock Tracks chart. Silver Side Up was released on September 11, 2001. Silver Side Up reached number 2 in the Billboard 200 and number 1 in the Canadian Albums chart. The Album stayed in the top ten on the Billboard 200 for many weeks. The album also reached the top ten in more countries. The band also shot a video for "How You Remind Me" which got a lot of play on MTV and other channels. After the band play some shows with 3 Doors Down they went to tour with Default, Seven Channels, and Saliva on the fall of 2001. On the week of December 22, 2001 "How You Remind Me" peaked at number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100. It stayed number one for four weeks straight and stay in the top ten for more than 20 weeks. In early of 2002 the band performed on the Juno Awards they also won many awards in the Juno Awards of 2002 including best group of the year. The band played its first UK show on early of 2002. By the summer of 2002, "Too Bad" was already their second single was another number 1 hit. On the Summer of 2002 they played Europe festivals The festivals contain an audience of 60,000 to 80,000 people. On the fall of 2002 they went back to do shows on North America. In the fall of 2002 "Never Again" was their third number 1 hit. On December 2002 on the Billboard Music Awards the band performed their hit single "How You Remind Me". The band also won four awards in the Billboard Music Awards which were Hot 100 single of the year, Hot 100 single of the year by duo/group, Top 40 rock track of the year and Hot 100 Airplay Single of the year On 2002 the Billboard Hot 100 single of the year was "How You Remind Me" becoming the most successful song of the year 2002. The band performed On January 13, 2003 on the American Music Awards and also the band was nominated for pop/rock category for best rock/duo group of the year. The band also played their final shows in early of 2003. Silver Side Up was certified 6x Multi Platinum on the RIAA. It was also certified 8x Multi Platinum on the CRIAA. The album also has more certifications around the world.
